Why? Did they changed the entire Steam games data? Thats surely not only the textures I guess, or is it?.

We were warned about this. It is the larger texture files. Read the patch notes.

I use Steam and it only took ~10 minutes to update. Logged in and verified functional. If for no other reason that alone makes Steam worth using for me.

Yup, only took me 20 minutes with steam and that was with the kids watching netflix and my wife watching youtube.

They gave us almost a week's warning that it was going to be big.

This is why I still prefer the good ol' MWO Patcher. The download through it was only 6.33GB instead of 6.9GB. Saved about 580MB.

I still have no idea why the Steam downloads are so much larger than going straight through MWO's own patcher.

Took 11 minutes with regular MWO client...

Pre-Steam I remember my patches taking a lot longer.... Maybe there is no universal answer here. To each their own, use what works best of the options provided.
