Inside the cockpit there should be an indicator for the bay doors.
Just an easy open and closed indicator.
Could be a nice active item in cockpit, not the HUD

There is. It's the yellow/green light often on left or right side. On many maps the color is indistinguishable which makes it nearly worthless.
