After a year off, I started playing again. I was a pretty good player back in the day and luckily managed to remember most everything. Just a little polishing and relearning the new meta/nerfs/boosts is really all I need to get completely back in the saddle.

Saying that, I restarted my career last week in tier 4 and have made my way halfway through tier 3. The way I understand it, I should be fighting against other tier 3 players, right? If that's true, something is broken. Most of who I'm fighting is tier 2 right now and I suspect tier 1 players are in the mix as well. I'm starting to recognize some of the names, so that's good news.

What's the point? Bragging rights?

And apparently PGI nerfed just about every one of my old builds

Tiers can be matched with your tier +/- 3 I think. So tier 1s can't be matched with tier 5s, but can be with tier 4s, I believe. At tier 3 you're basically going to be matched with everyone in the game, regardless of tier. The MM system works by trying to get matches with people of your tier, but expanding the parameters the longer you're in the queue.

No, I don't think T1 can be matched with T4. It's +/- 2 tiers. So you have 3 possible brackets:

T1-T2-T3
T2-T3-T4
T3-T4-T5

But matchmaker will prefer finding a full T5 or full T1 game first, or only use one or two higher tier players on same side to balance things out, before it will "open the valves" 2 tiers further, so I don't think a full mix of T2-T3-T4 is a common thing, since those who tested it say that games in T4 feel completely different than in T2/T3, it can also affect how high someone is on a particular tier, too (like mmr).

Tiers are basicaly just a hard rule "do not mix T1 with T4, ever, and T5 with anything better than T3, ever. Maybe sometimes mix T3 into T5, but try not to (open valve for example after 1 or 2 minutes of no games found).
