Well, cataphracts use to have a niche for players that wanted a good mix of balastics and energy hardpoints on a heavy chasis other than a Jagermech. With the release of both the Warhammer and Marauder it has lost that niche. Additionally, the Cataphract has always been considered a knuckle-dragger ( arms hang too low). It is still a viable mech, just not as popular with the current meta.
The only use for a Cataphract these days is to mount good energy weapons in the two high-mounted torso slots some of them have. Then, put an autocannon in the right torso and use the stupidly huge, hanging arms as shields. The Cataphracts that depend upon arm mounted weapons are basically unplayable these days since they mostly shoot dirt and have to expose an insane amount of the mech to enemy fire to hit anything.

I drove an awesome back in early Beta when PPC's were so slow the awesome could almost outrun the projectile. Ping was 800+ so could only hit stuff if it was right at the edge of minimal range and then most times didn't hit reg. Was so frustrating I quit and didn't come back until this year. Trauma to great to go back there again don't know what it is like now but if you want a challenge they seem pretty easy to pull apart even if PPC's are better then they were then (and still suck).
Awesomes are still a trainwreck, even though I like them. The huge torso hitboxes are still a problem, and while they can mount decent firepower, they bring nothing unique to the table. Zeus can do almost anything they can, and with higher speed and better hitboxes, and the Victor, while also having horrible hitboxes, does have the brawling and autocannon side of things covered.
The Awesome should be a tough medium to long-range fire support platform, but it usually has a bad time of it. The rescaling may help, though fixing all the PPC problems would really help. I also wish the Awesome hero "Pretty Baby" wasn't one of the worst mechs in the game.
