You can't go wrong with either the FS or ACH in my opinion.

The recommendations for the Jenner-Oxide are mostly due to its quirks ... otherwise it has the same limitations as any other Jenner in terms of hit boxes.

I've mastered Jenners and Firestarters along with some Spiders, Ravens and the Kit Fox. Lights have a completely different playstyle from any other weight class in my opinion (except maybe the Cicada) ... so they will take some playing to get used to but they are a lot of fun once you figure them out.

Personally, I've been thinking about getting the ACH now that it has been out for Cbills for a while and further quirk tweaks are less likely .. but I am still working on my Marauders and have yet to start my Archers :) ... never mind all the other mechs I am still working on. :)

Best Clan? ACH for everything. The others are just too slow, are undergunned or have bad hardpoint positions (or any combination of these).
Best IS? Oxide for SRM boating, Raven for poking, Firestarter for brawling.

But choice of mech should come last. Until you understand the nuances of being a light pilot with a big brass pair, you will not be at your most effective.

Pick up a Locust. Prepare to die and git gud. Then, next time you pick up a more durable light, you'll wreck more face than you could if you hadn't done so before.

Personally, I learned on the FS9 Hard to go wrong with that one for brawling. That said, may I also interest you in a locust? Sure, I enjoy my Firestarters, and they're a bit more forgivable, but there's nothing quite like stalking and taking down something five times your tonnage. That first time you manage to assassinate one of those assaults everyone leaves behind? Worth it.

So how exactly should I approach being a light pilot then? My idea is to try and keep constantly moving - which will be the hardest part for me. I'm not a great shot as I move. But I'm also going to work hard at trying to get behind the enemy and shoot them in the back. Keep in mind I'm using Jenners and the weapons I'll be using require close combat.

here's a list how i would rate the light mechs currently ingame.

1: oxide
2: arctic cheetah
3: jenner IIC
4: firestarter
5: raven
6: jenner
7: urban mech/spider
8: locust
9: commando/mist lynx

adder and kit fox are played like small mediums and require a different playstyle so i didnt put them in the list. (they can be good mechs tho)

wolfhound and panther seems to be mid tier mechs but i havent seen them enough/used them to rate them. I suspect raven/jenner tier.

The light pack or assassin is my favourite playstyle. That said, You can also do an impressive amount of tanking as a light.

For me, playing a light is about the close range high damage build. You are a fast moving projectile, I feel the addition of further range dilutes your damage capacity and leaves you undergunned when you eventually meet other lights.

Remember, you may end up meeting an Apex Predator that you cannot outrun.

I did just buy the Jenner Mastery bundle. Here's to hoping for some good things.

While I realize the SRM builds of the Jenners work really well I'm more the type of player that would prefer using lasers.

I'm running the JR7-F(C) with 6 MPL. Runs really really hot but other than that (and having a bit less armor), it plays like the Oxide.

I finally gave the Oxide a try - SRM4 x2 and SRM2 x2. It's not bad. I've got a lot of learning to do with it but I wasn't terrible last night for my first run. I think most of my "bad" matches were due mostly to the team as a whole not doing very well. I mean the very first match I played with the Oxide I was shooting guys like a mad man running around with an Atlas helping him out etc... Atlas and I both got kills and finally I was killed. Well when I died and finally had to check things out I noticed we were getting our asses kicked and wound up losing 4 - 12. Through that match I thought our team was actually doing pretty well. A couple other matches I just couldn't get into any kind of position to really help. Everywhere I turned I was getting hit and hard so those wound up sucking.

Now, getting the 6,500 MC and being gifted the Arctic Cheetah... Let me tell you I decided to give that a try and I liked the looks of the default loudout so well I ran with it. That thing I love. Six small lasers, ECM, decent speed and takes more damage - a lot more damage than the Jenner. My average damage over three games with it is just under 350. That's pretty damn good for me, especially in a light, and especially with that kind of loadout. I am definitely going to be getting two more Arctic Cheetahs and running around with them a lot more. Yeah, I wish I had gone with Arctic Cheetahs over the Jenner at this point, but I like the Jenner well enough that I think I'll be able to make it work in the long run.

I think I will run with MPL as well on one of my Jenners because I like pulse lasers so well.

The wolfhounds have excellent hardpoints while being tanky af, I was surprised how well they perform.

I personally prefer the Wolfhound. But as one has mentioned the Jenner Oxide is easily the best.

Your Oxide build should be 4x Srm4s, it packs way more punch. I rock mine with an xl 280 with 450 missles. Mastered it runs at 139. If you get behind any mech you will decimate it.

I've also mastered the Ach and the Fs9. Statistically my Ach is my best mech, I really think it's the hit boxes and 6 jump jets with ecm that sperates it from the rest of the lights. I used to be a 6 spl guy on it, but since they nerfed clan heatsinks I've gone down to 5 and enjoy it very much.

I wouldn't be disappointed in your choice of the jenner, once you get the hang of your oxide and module it out with srms cd/range, seismic, radar derp. You'll see what a monster such a little puny looking **** box mech it is.

The reason I went with SRM2x2 was so that I could load up more ammo. I'm still working on the loadout of it. I wasn't disappointed with the combination of SRM4's and 2's other than the damage is a bit low. But I expected such considering the loadout. I definitely need to work on modules and that's going to take time. For now I'm just going to try and make work what I've got. I have seismic and radar derp that I can equip on it. I don't have SRM range unlocked yet. And the SRM's are also something I need to work on as far as aim goes.

I'm not going to give up on the Jenner's. I see the potential.

As for the ACH I'm not sure if I'm going to change out the small lasers or SPL or not yet... I may wait on that a bit yet. I am very impressed with the ACH so far though.

To those mentioning the Wolfhound - it's on my radar as well. I like being able to take some damage. I feel like I do more for the team if I'm also a target and can get hit a few times while they don't. What I really enjoyed with the ACH was being able ot turn a few guys around and have them try to focus on me. And quite frankly... The six small lasers do pretty damn good damage as well.

I would recommend a light that actually takes proper damage. The adder is a good one

The best lights at the moment are the Cheeto, the firestarter, the Oxide and the missile boat Jenner IIC. Everything else is weaker but Ravens and wolfhounds are both viable.

Jenner IIC is really powerful. It will completely destroy all other light mechs in 1v1 (long as the pilot is good). If I win the 1v1 what ever mech I'm driving will be critical in most areas.

Arctic Cheetah is not bad. I mastered it and its hella fun with ECM. But won't be able to load it up with a lot powerful weapons.

Spiders are fun. Annoying and really hard to kill because of its size.

Seen some really powerful Firestarter.

Seen some really powerful wolfhounds as well.

Im saving my CBillz for Jenner IIC
