I've only been playing for 2 days now, although I've played (and beaten) every MW game since MW2 so I understand the concepts at work here. However I'm having some trouble figuring out how to helpfully customize my mech.

I bought my first mech with CBills earlier today, and I can see how to swap weapons, but I can't figure out how to make more meaningful changes like w/ heat sinks, types of armor and internals, etc. When I click on things like "ferro fibrous" or "endo steel" I can't swap the option, perhaps it's fixed for my mech?

In particular I wanted to add more heat sinks since I keep overheating, but I couldn't figure out how.

Also... is there no purchasing/sale of weapons the way there was in Mercenaries? Are we just allowed to take whatever weapons we want for free?

First of all, what mech did you purchase? If it was a Clan omni, you can modify pods (akin to body parts), which will give you different hardpoints to mount different kind of weapons in, but you will not be able to change things like structure or type of armor. If it was an Inner Sphere mech, and clicking "Endo Steel" will not install the upgrade, chances are you do not have anough free slots available (IS endo steel and FF armour each take up 14 slots).

As long as you have free tonnage, you should be able to add heat sinks. Look for a tab on the right of the screen, called "Equipment", next to "Weapons" and "Ammo", where you should find heat sinks corresponding to the appropriate type on your mech.

So, you have to drag/drop weapons and equipment from the appropriate tab onto the mech's layout in MechLab. Doing so BUYS the equipment, in the event that you do not already OWN it. If you DO own it, then it's simply removed from your warehouse and installed on that mech, in order that you can't be charged to buy another instance of it when you don't NEED another one.

As for ENDO/FERRO/DHS/ARTEMIS, you have to SAVE (yellow button on the left side) to BUY those upgrades. You can EQUIP them in MechLab, so that you can play with how that effects your loadout, but until you SAVE, no CBills are spent and the mech cannot be played.

ENDO and FERRO require that you have the appropriate available critical space. You should be familiar with that concept. 14 critical slots for Inner Sphere, 7 for Clan. Those CANNOT be changed on Clan OMNIMECHS, but they CAN on Clan BATTLEMECHS. Omnimechs are locked-in to those.

For changing your HEAT SINK type, it will automatically remove any that are not of the new type (and they'll be added to your warehouse inventory). You will have to equip heat sinks of the new type. Again, like with anything else, if you do not OWN them you can still EQUIP them in MechLab, but it's not BOUGHT until you hit SAVE.

ARTEMIS IV? Any launchers equipped on the mech, other than Streak SRM launchers, will be removed and added to the warehouse inventory. If you want to equip Artemis-IV launchers, you'll have to find them in the weapons tab on the right, drag/drop, and save. Same for ammo, which is different for Artemis and non-Artemis launchers. And, like the launchers, Artemis IV does not affect Streak SRM ammo.

TL;DR- It's a drag-and-drop experience, and nothing is paid for until you click SAVE.

Some mechs you cannot change the armor type or the structure type (endo-steel). To change weapons, go into the Mechlab and then select load-out of the left top of the screen. You will then see Warehouse of the right side. There you can select weapons, equipment, sensors, etc. You will have to buy what you do not have. You do that by equiping it and then Save. Ir will then ask you if you want to spend the c-bills to buy the stuff you equipped. Also there is a Strip Mech button in the bottom right box that lets you take all the weapons and equipment off the Mech and start with empty hard points.

just to be clear, Clan Mechs (when you first purchase most are painted green with a fair amount of grey) will usualy be Omnimechs, that means you cannot change anything beyond weapons or omnipods for hardpoints, some have additional fixed equipment including but not limited to heatsinks, jumpjets, active probe, MASC.

All Inner Sphere Mechs(when you first purchase they will have usualy have mostly green cammo) and the Clan IIC Mechs are Battlemechs on a Battlemech you can change engine size/type, heatsink type, structure and armor types, and they do not have any fixed equipment.

I suspect if you cannot change structure type you probably have an Omnimech
