Assaults are supposed to be the best protected mechs.

But virtually every one of them will strip as much armor as they can get away with (Or make themselves vastly easier to kill with XL) for more speed.

B/c armor is second rate to speed and being small.

Edit: just a thought I had seeing someone talking.

Edit 2: Seems some people are getting defensive. This isn't meant to be judgemental. I just thought it was a hilarious observation that the only way assaults can do their job is by taking away the things that are supposed to be their job.

Disclosure, I've been gone for quite a while.... but.....

That is my highest firepower Atlas, however there isn't that much armor stripped off.

AS7-S with AC20 and 4 SRM6 + Artemis is the king of brawling assaults, STD350ish. Its awesome.

Irony- assaults are the most heavily armored mechs in the game, yet are the most fragile. A 400 ton lance wiped out by 80 tons of Locusts every time they are left alone in the first 3 minutes of the match.

And you sacrificed firepower to do it by not having any energy weapons worth mentioning.

Same difference.

You'd rather have a 20% boost in speed, than an almost 20% boost in firepower.

You literally tripled the size of the area they could aim at and kill you.....so you could go faster.

Exactly my point.

Edit: Banshee is IS mech right?

I think he's referring to the XL engine.

Either way, his point is invalid because the Wubshee has a tendency of killing its enemies faster than they can kill it...

"My point" that he traded survability for speed / firepower is invalid?

That's not even a conclusion, that's just an observation.....but one that proves my ACTUAL point.

It's more useful for him to be fast than hard to kill.

I shave bits of armor to fit more heatinks and guns. My skill in the Banshee has let me survive longer than I typically do in a STD because of my marked increase in mobility. While still having near max armor and a 57 alpha.

I don't understand this observation of yours.

Except that a good pilot in a Banshee with an XL can be extremely hard to kill?

Other than legs or arms without weapons who is stripping armor off assault mechs? The worst i do is front load 99% of my armor.

Lets try another example:

Executioner with a comparable alpha of 57, with MORE armor than that Wubshee.

Exactly.

By making yourself easier to kill, you become harder to kill.

The definition of irony.

For like the 5th time, yes that is the point.

That is not irony at all.
You just have a very simple two dimensional understanding of the mechanics at play.

Mobility means you effectively have better armor- that is, you're better able to get to and use cover. Thus, people often favor higher engine ratings on their fatties when possible- the Dire Whale doesn't get wrecked so often because it's heavily armored, after all. It's because it gets caught out of cover and has to depend on finite armor vs. much less finite terrain protection.

Still, the only place I usually reduce armor a bit on assaults is legs. Even then, not much.

Regarding the Wubshee: What makes it so hard to kill is more their torso-twist-rate with a high engine rating than the "high" speed alone - the Wubshee can hide her precious XL behind her arms.

Fast torso twist + less facetime-wubbers = twist and shout ... err ... shoot

I usually only ever skimp a bit on leg armour or head armour. Outside of that I'm always running max armour and STD engines on my Stalker and King Crabs. The Banshee is a special case for Assaults where XL engines actually make it tougher as the increased mobility allows it to shield with it's massive arms.

XL in assault ..never
Low armour in an assault... never

Not sure what twilight zone you play in, but noXL Max armour is the mantra of all assault pilots I know/see
