Long Tom is just bad, it should be removed completely

People just dont play on maps where Long Toms are present because its a crappy mechanic to insta kill whole teams.

Our Unit's CW commander has cancelled all Faction Warfare drops after watching nine get one shotted by artillery without firing a shot in return. The rest of the unit is considering getting refunds on all Kodiak, Viper and Cyclops preorders.

I could not even convince anyone to do scout drops with the event going on. They are doing public drops and trying to forget all the ways that PGI tries to destroy their own game.

Edit - still can't believe this is an automatic feature. What were they thinking?

Look i love all these ppl telling others to spread out
Stop bunching up, sure fine, 1-2 mechs dying every 2 minutes wont affect match at all.
Thats what?? 13-26 mechs dying before timer hits 0?? Walk it off, still possible to win.

No, theres 1 way to counter long tom, do jihad jenner. Grab some reasonably fast mech, wait for long tom timer and run into enemy.
Hell i destoyed 7 enemy mechs during 1 cycle doing that. Match still lost despite enemies being incapable of handling us in normal firefight.

Optimal way to cw now??
1)Get your unit members, force them all to buy mediums and lights regardless if they are assault or heavy mains.
2)Split them into 4 man teams and send them scouting
3)Gather up village idiots and tell them to attack or defend in 12v12.

Argument courtesy of Zoid:

If you're tired of getting crushed by long toms, get better.

Yes, sure, sometimes you'll get the occasional 1-shot that you can't do anything about. But can you make the experience of playing against long toms better by becoming better yourself? Absolutely! And there will be entire games where you do not get one-shotted by long toms. So because this is the case, there should definitely be no changes to long toms and by no means should you avoid dropping on planets against them.

Yep, I've been playing at least 6 hours a day for the past 6 months or so.
Droppped a couple hundred dollars on this game so far.

Bought $100 worth of MC in the last sale just because I was so excited for CW Phase 3.

Now I don't even want to play any more.

Having experienced it a lot more, I've come to the conclusion that the Long Tom is useless vs like less than 10% of the population (aka the comp-coordinated level players/units) and like 90%+ effective vs everyone else.

I'm convinced that after this event, that the CW queues will be even more devoid of players... like the tactical nuke that was deployed by PGI. The simple fact that they even haven't reduced the frequency of the tactical nuke tells you all you need to know how out of touch PGI is with game balance.

The Tactical Nuke is always the MVP of the drop. Everyone else loses money/rewards as a consequence.

Yep. Plus the re-combine on the queues. It's why the bulk of Davion loyalists had left; there's no way to keep up with the suicide lemming pugs raining free wins on the enemy. HHoD was #1 on the Loyalist list right up until the day the queues recombined, then? The Bads are Back In Town.

Now we're on the death-spiral again. PGI managed to put an event in to draw players to FW at the same time they had mechanics in place to make new players hate FW extra.

I applaud PGI leaving nothing to chance - you make a bad experience and you bribe people to put up with it for a short period of time and you'll teach them to hate it on principle. Maybe they're just trying to kill FW and say 'hey we tried'?

I wonder if there even should be some sort of safeguard reminder or something?

If you are losing miserably and on some epic losing streak (let's start @ 5 just for fun), then perhaps the game needs to remind you to "get better", get in a group, or simply lock you out.

I get there are good teams in the queue, but if you're just playing for the sake of playing for the event and not really winning, you're just banging the head against the wall.

I have yet to encounter the Long Tom...perhaps those who despise the mechanic should consider scouting more effectively.
I do not mean this as a smarmy answer. We (Liao) often end up losing the planet we are defending but remain up on the scouting war. (I'm talking to you HHOD). Win the scouting war or stalemate it. Otherwise, get blown away for your lack of foresight. It is not hard to form a four-man for scouting duties.
Cheers!
