Protect: Cn9-AH , Grf-2N both a bit slow, but powerful and tanky for maps with lots of cover like caustic or river city. Crb-27B for large maps like polar highlands or grim plexus.

For gathering intel: Raven 3L
For both: Shadowhawk 2D/ 2D2

Ah man, that would be funny.
Can we get a couple of units on the IS sides to do some Urban mech only scout drops against each other and record them?
However, in answer to the OPs question, I personally favour the Ice Ferret. I think it's the perfect mech for these missions.

For Protect missions I use the Shadowcat. Honestly, the only reason I use it over the Storm Crow is because I don't as quickly.

AH with AC20, 3xsrm4, xl255 for cold and heat neutral maps. Enough firepower to eat stormcrows and griffins, but heats up like crazy.
D with lbx10, 2xsrm4, 2 flamers, xl300, for caustic valley and sometimes a heat neutral map, if I'm in a group that I know will bring enough firepower. This mech is a custom disabler and fps hugging-facetanking machine that's quick at disabling, but a bit slow at actually killing mechs, so having it on a team that didn't bring enough firepower can make me easily focused and eaten. Otherwise it's a beast.
Once clan, I think about using 12sl and 6mpl novas, or spl Ice Ferrets.

Locust PB for intel runs. 2xMPL 2xSPL
Locust 1E for the more direct approach. 6xSPL...nuff said

Alternatively my Centurion AH with AC20 + 3xSRM4 has crazy damage, but that XL engine makes it fragile.
Too bad my unit prefers clan contracts....

Well, Clarice, have the Crows stopped screaming?
I like the Splat Crow with quad ASRM6 and SPL. It burns things down quite quickly. And unlike the Streaks, I can actually for a certain part of a mech.

Firepower to make short work of anything 55 tonnes or lighter.
Speed to catch the lights
Structure quirks to last after it should have gone down.

yeah I run 4xsSRM4 and 5-6 ERSL on my Crow. Aiming is my friend. I actually prefer the normal SRMs, and think against good players, they are more effective, but bads poop themselves at the thought of 16+ streaks. And while they worry about them, I carve their leg off with my pewpews.
I hate the overbearing Legging tactic, but sadly, it is what it is. And not really sure what could be done to stop it (aside from a more immersive, skill based aiming system. )

The KTO-18 shines in this Scouting Mode because it almost always comes down to a quick, vicious, short-ranged brawl.

Considering whether 10% AC5 cooldown, 25% torso twist speed and 1 SRM4 launcher is worth more than MASC, 20% ballistic velocity and 5% missile cooldown - it might be that the loyalty WVR is good for scouting, either with 2xAC5 + 2xSRM4 or with 1xUAC5 2xASRM6.

Quick question Bearflag - do you bother with Artemis?
Also - what's the sweetspot on the engine size? Too small an XL and tyou are at the mnercy of the unforgiving hitboxes on the KTO (unless they've changed the hitboxes recently?)
