From TRO 3025:
Many pilots also provide their Mech with false armor head protectors, which gives them the appearance of wearing a helmet. The Rationale is that incoming missiles and autocannon fire will explode against the false armor instead of the actual head armor. This is, at best, a poor solution to the problem weakness.
From TRO 3039:
Other versions carry false head protectors, which pilots thought would give slightly more protection against missiles and projectiles impacting against the ’Mech’s exposed head. Shortly after the Fourth Succession War, a Federated Suns think tank did a study on this theory, originally proposing to outfit all remaining BattleMechs with such a cheap and low-tech add on. The study determined, however, that the head protectors actually caused more damage by restricting a MechWarrior’s vision, and they created extra shrapnel when hit with weapons fire. The proposal was dropped, and many Cyclopspilots quickly took off the “helmets.”
So if that's not the cockpit, where is it? Because the lore would seem to indicate that's the cockpit. I think most people get confused because of the Mektek version.
