They are collecting dust, so focus on having a good mouse and keyboard that you like instead.

Have you tried using them again? A good JS in the left hand is pretty nifty and I started playing this in 2015. I'm sure the joystick experience has improved since MW:O first came out.
If not, could I give you an address you could send that hardware to?

I use them in conjunction with a mouse. Left hand on joystick, right on mouse. Throttle/Leg control.
I'm not sure why people like using digital inputs like a keyboard for movement, drives me crazy

Honestly - track down a Saitek Cyborg Evo.
It's a fantastic stick, and ambidextrous, so you can use it for left or right hand (I actually use two, so one for each hand!).
It's also very durable (one of mine is 12+ years old at this point and used pretty heavily for at least half that, the other second hand, and only used for about a year by me, but neither show any particular sign of wear)
X/Y Axis + Z Twist, 11 buttons (inc trigger), 4 way HAT switch, Throttle Slider and very responsive, tight control.

I've tried lots of other sticks.
Including newer Saitek ones (FLY5 for example, which has been relegated to 'travel stick') and none have been as good as these, especially for Mech.

gotta catch em all you know?
in a more serious note, I can recomment the cyborg evo, too. I have it as a wireless version and it still works fine after all those years.
By the way, joystick for movement is fine you can still aim with the mouse.

See, here's the thing... if I can't accurately use a HOTAS exclusively to pilot my mech like I can in Mech 2-4... then there's literally 0 point in even trying to use a joystick in MWO. Everything you can do with a joystick you can do better with a Keyboard/Mouse, and this is coming from someone who EXCLUSIVELY ran HOTAS in Mech 2-4.
I've tried since they "improved" the joystick controls in MWO, and it's just not where it needs to be... the restrictions on torso movement being varied by mech hurt it far too much to be useful.
OP, if you're going to get a stick, get something worthwhile that will be useful in various other circumstances. I personally recommend the Saitek X52 pro.

I thought about building myself a mouse with a sudo-joystick handle on it.....

The Cyborg Evo will better suit Mech and still be versatile, for only £20-30, $30-40. (It's part of why I got 2 Cybrogs - HOTAS was £100+, a second Cyborg was £20)

What does ambidex have to do anything with what OP was asking for. I put in my 2 cents... I could care less about ambidex support considering the only real reason outside of being left handed to have an ambidex joystick in MWO is for the stupid "stick/mouse" combo some players use.
For me, a joystick is 100% pointless in MWO if I cannot accurately use a full HOTAS setup for the game. BUT I do flightsims and spacesim's as well.
