I don't know if PGI keeps track of how much certain mechs are used, but what if that was shown on the server just like the % of light, medium, etc?
What if linked to that, the top 10 least used variants were listed and those variants got an increasing C-Bill bonus the longer they were on the list?
Take the Trebuchet 5J. First day it is on the top ten it is a 5% bonus to c-bills, second day it hops up to 10% and so on to cap out at 25% bonus. This would be a bonus off the base c-bills earned, you would get normal bonus for premium or if it is a hero, etc.
Would that tempt you to buy or play one of the 'unused'?
I post this because my beloved Trebuchets are all but forgotten by most folks (rightly so in some instances) and there are other mechs you rarely see as well like dragons and victors.

wouldn't make a difference. even with bonuses the under-performers would underperform

Interesting concept. What if you employed diminishing returns based on firepower rating or some convoluted form of BV too? Less risk, less returns.

It would make things that don't do as much damage make more money... .like lights that do really well for their loadout but still get less than a meta whale.

Set tier caps maybe then and make it dynamic based on the 24 hours average? Attaching it to the least played mechs kinda does that too assuming the least played mechs are the least meta but that isn't always the case....

However it would work, so long as it would help diversify the list at least a little bit.
There are hidden gems some people are able to use better than others, better to encourage trying out different mechs.
I still want mech selection to affect LP and RP in Faction Warfare too.

I wouldn't bother with the idea...it's been posted numerous times and still nothing has happened.
FWIW, I own 5 Trebs...4 of which are mastered, except the hero. I'd love the idea but don't see PGI doing anything about it. It would actually be counterproductive to them selling new mechs for real money.
I mean...who in their right mind is going to buy Trebs for MC???

Signed, let's try it.
Maybe we should ask PGI to give us a full list of mech popularity, start with the least popular...

I wouldn't mind if you got earnings bonuses based upon playing under-represented weight classes. For each percentage point under 25 a weight class was represented in the queue you get that much of a percentage bonus on your earnings? Might equal out the weight class distribution a bit more. And it will never equal the c-bill bonuses from Hero, Special, and pre-order bonus mechs.

What if we used a rating system across all games played to rate every weapon and every variant based on their performance, and then used that rating system to modify payouts of both c-bills and XPs...
You know, something like Elo for weapons/Mechs. Over the thousands of games played daily, it would be pretty damn accurate and would automatically account for changes to weapon stats and variant quirks in real time. It'd be like a dynamic BV.

The believers would use more bad 'Mechs, the smart players who ignored it would get more easy kills and by extension, more money/xp from playing.

It's not a bad idea. I'd suggest the following, as long as we're tinkering with it:
A 5% C-Bill bonus for playing a 'faction 'mech' for your current faction (So, Commando and Zeus for Steiner, or Mauler, Panther, Jenner for Kurita, etc).
A 1% C-Bill bonus for every 5 tons below the max weight for your class (so a Victor would get a 4% bonus over playing an Atlas)
