I've always pronounced it 'gire', as in 'dire'

'Jeer' sounds stupid

Doesn't it get confusing when there are 12 Filthy Clan mechs on opposing team, how does your team know which one specifically to shoot at ?

Ummm... Gyr in Gyrfalcon is pronounced Juhr.

Notice the schwa:

noun gyr·fal·con \ˈjər-ˌfal-kən, -ˌfȯl- also -ˌfȯ-kən\

Schwa makes the sound of "uh." But it's a de-stressed vowel sound that, between two consonants, causes the sounds of the consonants to blend together. The Y in Gyr makes the same sound as the O in Falcon. Juhr Falcuhn. Though, because the schwa is always de-stressed, it has the quick "uh" sound like the A at the beginning of "about." So basically Jer. J'r Falc'n.

Depending on where you believe the etymology of the Gyr in Gyrfalcon comes from, Gyr could also correctly be pronounced Jire, as in gyroscope, since this is the possible latin origin of the name. Because of that and because the Gyr in Night Gyr has a different stressing than it does in Gyrfalcon, it could likely follow the traditional stressed version of Gyr - Jire.

So no, not JEER.

Seriously... this is like elementary school English folks. What are they teaching in schools these days.

English mother *******... do you speak it? Posted Image

jer-falcon

- /ˈdʒəːfɔːlkən/
- /ˈjərˌfalkən/
- /ˈdʒɜːrfælkən/
- /ˈdʒɜrˌfɔl kən, -ˌfæl-, -ˌfɔ-/

Or in other words, "Night Gyr" would be pronounced,

"Night Jer."

Provided the Gyr in Night Gyr is de-stressed like it is in GyrFalcon, yes. Though, it's difficult to say Night Gyr without stressing Gyr - Night being a descriptor, and Gyr being the described - you end up with a double-stress.

As such, the stressed version of Gyr is Jire. Jer is the most correct based on Gryfalcon, but may be less correct based on Night Gyr. Perhaps I lean a bit toward jire, looking at the design of the mech and how round everything is conjures up the roundness implied by the latin gyr. I'm inclined to accept either.
