What are some fun single player games that people can play to develop crucial skills needed for a game like MWO?

I ask about single player games because no one can antagonize you for learning in a single player game.

I'll start by saying that "Mass Effect" offers a good viewing of squad play. You have to rely on your teammate's abilities as much as your own for victory.

Please mention anything that might be good skill exercise for this game. Hell...... I like to play "Republic Commando" during times when my aim and team play has diminished. That is one that no one seems to remember.... I think?

Crucial skills in MWO has nothing to do with dexterity and being skillful. It's knowledge of the game, of the battlemech, how weaponry work best, positioning, playing the game to learn it. how did you get T1?

Joining a squad would help tremendously.

Left 4 Dead 2. Practice killing Hunters before they pounce on you. :)

There was a time when I was doing laps on Jade and Vancouver murderizing mobs on my own. As a Human Infiltrator and Human Paladin at that. Granted Bronze mobs, but still...

The best way to learn is to join a team with scheduled practice nights and dedicated trainers. There's so many small details in this game you may not know about even if you do a lot of reading. (Like how damage transfer works or what weapons actually pair well together).

That said, if you're looking for some solo practice any time you want, Mech4 is probably the next best thing. You need to drive a mech to get a feel for torso position, momentum and heat management.

It's called Insanity for a reason, so you don't need to question yourself -- you already provided an answer.

(Full disclosure. I did do the ME2 insanity run. I hate Krogans as a result.)

Play Dark Souls series. It teaches you to not to over-commit, and encourages you to have situational awareness. ;)

Infiltrator + Black Widow w/ damage/penetration mods and warp rounds. Cloak -> *bang bang bang* -> next group of enemies. Rinse and repeat until zone is clear.

Really not that hard. ME1 as an Infiltrator on Insanity was harder.

**** if you want true insanity in Mass Effect 3, try soldier with a "marksman" committed build (the bonus skill you get from Ashley)......... Damn..... I mean, that is a hard play through.

Black Widow is overkill for most mooks. I prefer to use Valiant double tap (without cloak) on mooks and go for weak spots with cloaking with bigger things. Didn't really need consumables either.

And the MP had rounds to specifically screw with just sitting back and clearing the mobs. Even on normal rounds, going jogging helps to clear spawns faster, and you get to set up for the next round by doing spawn camping.

here is my workout routine

hit alt+f4 every time a map you dont like comes up.
practice shooting your weapons as close to your team mates as possible when the game starts.
do some lrm squats behind the various rocks and buildings in the game.
practice your leeroy jinkens technique when the game has devolved into a poke fest and you get bored.
be sure to post multiple threads a day complaining about weapon balance that will improve your technique greatly.
call your team mates idiots as often as possible, you will make t1 in no time!
also be sure to practice your arm chair leadership skills when you die.

Here is a game for you.....

"Alien Isolation"

That will help you when you pilot a light mech. You will know just how to sneak, just where to hide.... and how to take advantage of distractions.

Or how about XCOM? and knowing how to set up firing lines, or how to break through the enemy's?

The best way to get better at any game is to play it a lot, preferably with and against people who are better at it than you.

Play some semi-realistic ww2 flying games. I think there are a lot of parallels to be drawn. MWO requires understanding positioning and sort of being able to read situations to see if they are favorable or not, and trying to make situations favorable.
