Hi there, folks.

Does anyone see the same challenge for the KDK-1 that I see?
If you mount all it's hardpoints you're going to need at least 4 weapon groups, because there's no way to fire 9 energy weapons (flamer and TAG aside) without ghostheat.
Granted, you could put an UAC20 and SRMs in the same weapon group as the projectile speeds don't differ that much (650 m/s 400 m/s), but anything else would have either a different lead angle (ballistics and SRM) or a different targeting mechanic altogether (missile lock).
So usually you will have to deal with...
  • 1) 5 Energy
  • 2) 4 Energy
  • 3) 2 Missile
  • 4) 1 Ballistic
...which undoubtedly leads to more face time (clan laser durations) and the challenge to work 4 groups into a firing pattern.

And please don't mix small, medium or large lasers... you'll need an additional weapon group for everyone of those, too.

If any mech shuts down, you are almost certain to die. The clan laser build mechs are high alphas, but the beam time means you need more lasers just to get some impact if the target doesnt twist and shake.

Typical heat for mechs with 6 med ER lasers is going to be around 50 heat then do you try to add in two blue lasers? if so that's 60-70 heat in one shot. It's rare I get to insta-kill a target with that (unless you catch someones back).

I dont think they should have nerfed the laser builds but first see how it goes.

Agility buffs seems to suggest the mechs had a problem padding.

Structure buffs seems to suggest there's areas in the mech that catch a lot of hits.

I wish they allowed selected public players to test these things :)

I am suffering against blacknights and warhammers, the short beam times mean an insta-core on any component before I can pad it off. Clan mechs cannot achieve this damage speed without PPC's.

I really like the crampt conditions and poor visabilty of the cockpit. Gives me the impression of being at the helm of a battle cruiser. It has a great sence of weight, wd o7

Hmm really didnt miss much then

Is it just me or are cockpit designs getting lazy and repeatative?

To be quite honest this one is unique to me, It has a lot of side-dash board which isn't that common in MW: O.
It also removed a lot of the above/ upper dash board which having that is rather common in MW: O
And the way the 'cowl' or the 'bear head' slicks over the cockpit gives it a unique look. (however not specifically a cockpit feature as it's an external factor).
However obviously it will be representative, It is a battlemech after all.

it isn't like an aircraft where you got cockpits designed for 2 people or 5 people or it being something like a tanks view port which is only a thin sliver and all your normal gear and stuff everywhere. Simply maths here. However the only thing I can say is that this cockpit only compares to the awesome I think and the shadowhawk (in terms of the cowl)

you sound like that people can't handle more then 2 or so weapon groups.

I already run 4 on nearly all my stalkers and a few with 6 and some with 5.
My current action groups (based on a stock build) will be...

1) 8 ER medium laser (Perma chain fire)
2) UAC 20
3) 2 CSTRK 6
4) ER large laser
5) 4 ER medium lasers
6) (other) 4 ER medium lasers

I only will be using 1, 2, and 3 at close ranges
4 at long range
and 5-6 is when I really want to limit my face time or want a more accurate kick.
(Before you ask I use only a 2 button mouse for this, I already learned to use the number 3 for missiles (typically guided and usually LRM's but here it'll be CSTRK's) and 4 for when I got long ranged lasers (typically on my stalkers).

but I will most likely play this thing the same as I would be in MW4: Mercs... so occasional armour rolling but mostly face tanking them while obliterating everything they know, love, and charish.

Furthermore, there is no rule you *have* to fill every hardpoint.

Having that many just means you have options.

Four weapon groups is fine. This is Mechwarrior. Learn to deal with 4 weapon groups like a big grownup Mechwarrior.

You don't use a "firing pattern", you fire whatever is most appropriate for the situation.

1) Right arm > right mouse button
2) Left arm > left mouse button
3) Missiles > left shift
4) Ballistics > thumb mouse button.

as an example.

Yay, I got noticed by the "grown-ups"! :-D

Don't worry, I have mechs with and can handle 4 weapon groups .
I just wanted to point out that 9 energy hardpoints come with another challenge as opposed to "not getting quirked" because there are so many energy hardpoints.

I will get this working for me, but still the fewer the weapon groups the less room for error in the heat of battle.

Nonsense! Sometimes, 6 weapon groups are not even enough for me!

I often have two groups for the same weapons, one with cycling shot, one firing it all.
Perfect for heat management.

No really, I sometimes feel I could us a couple more weapon groups.
But I do okay with 6. Posted Image

All that aside, the Kodiak looks very, very good.

You can circumvent that partially by putting the group on chain fire and hitting the fire button multiple times. That fires your weapons in a much faster succession.

Hmm.. for me, this cockpit looks like someone found an old bus or truck from the 70's-80's, cleaned it, and build in 3 new monitor...

It's laughable that someone here still thinks a Timber Wolf with 2 cLPLs and 4 cERMLs is meta. That is a pretty unused build in competitive play, I don't know why you would bring that. If you do see a Timber, it will typically be a brawler or an ER PPC Gauss build (typically a personal preference for overwatch). I suppose I have seen Gauss plus LPLs as well. I don't ever remember seeing that laser vomit build, it just isn't good enough to justify it over a Black Knight for a similar role.

Buy a better mouse and train your hand. I have a logitech with two thumb buttons and a center button under the toggle wheel. Counting the two directions of the wheel I can control 7 functions with my right hand alone, besides moving the crosshairs around. I have it assigned to zoom in / zoom out on the wheel, consumables slot two with the button under the wheel, and weapon groups 1-4.

I was thinking the same thing. Just one of those dials that the designer is using is reused 8 times (maybe more) on 4 different parts of the cockpit. What annoys me most is that the inside of these mechs look like the cockpit of an old 1960's helicopter with the tech to match, not the inside of a mech we'd be piloting in the 31st century.
