To what degree of a persistent universe will MWO have? Should we expect something to the degree of EVE: Online (Players choose a faction, battle other factions over systems), or are we going to see something more like just joining games as in BF3, but with a shallow RPG backend so your character can advance? I'm not really sure what to expect from online play besides explosions and rage

One should not expect eve depth from this for quite some time. Think world of tanks to start.

EVE is one deep game, this will be very fun just in different ways. Later though I hope for a depth that rivals EVE.

The notion is for planets to actually change hands, and for that to do something (reduced purchase costs on weapons was a possibility). However, the devs have stated that this won't be operational for Operation Inception (the August 7th Founders -> beta).

Yeah I just took a look at the link posted...I definitely feel there is an EVE influence in some of the game design on merc corps and faction warfare, I'm actually pretty excited to see how it all turns out. I know it won't be as deep, but will be really fun to get a brand new slate to draw on

From what I know that I think has been said by the devs, at a later date there will essentially be faction wars, and likely clan wars in the future, these fights will be over territory, (I imagine planets) and depending on what all your faction owns depends on a variety of bonuses that your faction gets, like bonus exp/c-bills, lower repair costs, etc etc.

It would be cool if MWO could be like Final Fantasy Online with a planet or city (Home) to meet people, buy stuff, fine lancemates, and get missions.

Except that MechWarrior: Online is not an RPG, and will not feature PvE upon launch (if ever).

Being a merc I can't wait to get paid to kill mechs for guys with too much cash and too little time.

I think a persistent gaming "universe" sounds like an awesome idea, with shifting battlefront lines across planets as the different Houses conduct Mech warfare. Perhaps a given house could be "wiped out" if all of their planets and capital planet were conquered, which awards the campaign "win" to the conquering house (along with some rewards and/or recognition) and then resets the "universe" for all houses? Maybe temporary Alliances could be formed or advantages given to less dominant houses to fight against situations where one dominant house seems to win over and over and over. The Clan invasion could add a whole new element to the situation as well.

Similarly, they could even to do time period "rotations", where each week you move into a different Battletech era where only those Mechs and technology available at that time could be used. So, a 3025 era, a 3039 era, 3050 (Clans), etc. This would at least encourage people to play ALL eras of Mechs, rather than people moving completely to Clan-era technology when it arrives and forgetting/neglecting any or all of their Inner Sphere stuff.

/sigh, don't mind me, I am just stoked at the possibilities. I am so glad they are finally making MWO a reality, can't wait for August 7th.

Decent discussion about this aspect we were having yesterday. I had to go look it up after I read this one.
