But then, why not just buff the larger launchers themselves?

Yeah. Fix large LRM launchers. That would go a long way towards making Archers happy (and towards removing LRM 5 spam as the only logical Choice for LRMs on any mech mounting them).
Reduce the spread on 20's and 15's for a start, see how that works out and og from there with incremental buffs until the big launchers are in a good place.

No, but serously, some of us do want to keep our Archers as close to their original purpose as possible, in other words as one of _the_ iconic "BIG LRMS!" mounting heavies in IS history. Making them SRM spammers just feels wrong. And yes, for the record I _am_ one of those people who feel quirks should reinforce the mech's usefulness in Stock configuration and that customizability in the mechlab should be Limited, just so you know where I stand and can take that into account when you consider whether or not my opinion is worth bothering with from where you stand on those issues.

You are, however, correct about the armor/structure thing. One of the Archer's big characteristics (much like mechs like the Thunderbolt and Crusader) was its impressive durability compared to many mechs of equal or even greater weight.

But now we run into the age old problem with LRM buffs. At the moment LRMS are OP in tiers 4 and 5. Flash over to tiers 1, 2, 3 where everyone know how to not die from LRMS and they are underpowered. How do you balance a weapon like that? make it viable for Tier 1 and 2 and Tier 4 and 5 will become a living hell.

True, you can actually stand still in tier 5...that's a thing....However the bulk of the player base is some where between tier 3 and 5. If the game becomes unplayable in those tiers over a long period of time, it will gut the game basically; people will move on. LRMs to need a rework without a doubt but how?
