A lot of people stay away from Faction Play because of the often ridiculously long wait times. It's much easier and more fun to just queue up for a QP match than to wait 10+ minutes for a FP match. My idea is to implement QP-style queues into FP in the following way:
1) Players queue up under the FP tab in either 4v4 (scouting), 8v8 (skirmish between heavies/assaults), and 12v12 (current FP invasion mode)
2) Matchmaker arranges players similar to in QP
3) Instead of voting for a map and gamemode, players vote for the planet currently being attacked, or for the planets that need to be defended
4) Loyalists have 3x multiplier, Mercs have 2x, Freelancers have 1x
5) After 24 hours, faction with most wins owns the planet, whether they were attacking or defending
Players can still vote for which planet to attack during the attack phase. Just a rough idea but what do you guys think?

LOL players like myself have been suggesting that they make quick play into a part of the faction play since early beta, but alas PGI seems to want to have two separate games. I don't know why....FP is your bread and butter and it's dying due to pug stompings and long waits
The easiest way to fix FP...make pug queues and make quick play factor into FP!!! Or at least make more modes, like we already have a medium and light mech mode in Scout.
Make a "battlefield" mode which will be 8v8 in which assaults and heavies duke it out, the entire planet can't fall just cause a group captured an orbital cannon! Their needs to be urban warfare, and battles on open fields to see who will hold ground

Depends on what you mean by bread and butter. In terms of numbers, FP is a mode that soaks up a lot of resources and that relatively few people play. As it currently stands it's probably nowhere near worth the effort to keep running.
On the other hand if you mean that FP *could* be the thing that holds the game up and has the greatest replay value, sure. But what you're missing there is that there is no will to do anything to fix it. And Russ has effectively said in the last Townhall that nothing substantial is planned to change that - they consider it a more or less finished product, with some minor tweaks.
So you're best off waiting for Solaris.
