I think it would be really freakin cool, and CLASSY on PGI's part, if they rewarded players with unique camo patterns (that work on all of the mechs) and other goodies that can only be unlocked through achievements and gaining XP.

But...the caveat is...once you unlock it, you still have to pay for it with MC like any other camo pattern. That way, PGI gets paid for being awesome, while veteran players get to unlock awesome goodies that cannot be had without playing the game.

Basically, it would be stuff that CAN'T be bought without earning it first...but it's freakin cool sh*t...stuff you want to buy...stuff other players will go "wow I want that sh*t".....then you get to say, "you just have to earn your wings first, son."

;)

I'm not a fan of "unlocking" anything.

It just turns into another grind-fest mechanic that adds nothing valuable to the game, except for all those "carrot-on-a-stick" players that can't play something without "unlocking" something new every 15 minutes...

I really hate arbitrary progression systems.

A lot would depend on the manner of the unlock. For instance, a 'veteran' skin might require having played a minimum of 10 hours during the Closed Beta. Gate these things via milestones rather than progress grinding.

I'm in the middle. I'm wholly against unlocking things with game effects, as that becomes mandatory grind and THAT sucks hard. However, if they were to add achievement based decals? Kill markers stuff like that? Hell yes. It be all over that. Then people who like that stuff have something they can achieve and show off, and others don't care in the slightest.

From a time-to-implement POV, I'd guess they'd reward old customers with just about anything but a custom camo. Any new camo would have to be done separately on a pile of 'mechs (70ish now?), with more coming every months. Basically if you add both mechs and camos, the workload increases exponentially.

Skins are also very expensive for pgi (so many mechs!)but decals... that could happen.

Decals.
Huh...
I guess, even I, could get behind that idea.
Maybe different decals signifying the rank or something like kill-counters

Let's not get too hung up on logistics.... I was thinking more along the lines of EVERYONE being able to achieve it...if they play the game. Basically as a reward for forsaking their families and social lives.

But yeah, I think you kinda get the gist...

I didn't mean to conflate the word "veteran" with "experienced player"...I should have known how sensitive Founders can be.

I just meant that players that rack up crap tons of XP playing the game should get perks for it.

For example...after 2,000,000 XP you get "Reward 1"...after 4,000,000 XP you get "Reward 2", etc.

Pretty simple...and it rewards those that play the game a lot....but also makes them spend money if they want the goodies.

Me too. But...

What if instead of having to pay for it... it was free. And after acquiring so much XP on a chassis(250k, 500k, 1 million, etc) your mech gained a new status. Like champion, hero of the inner sphere, etc and gained a bonus to your earnings. Say... more XP and Cbills? Or more loyalty points if you're a loyalist.

Furthermore... what if every mech you pay IRL money for was already mastered? I mean people buying mechs with IRL money do it because they have more money than time, so why not prime that pump a little there. Let them be competitive from the get go.

The key is to keep the hamsters in the wheel so the rest of us have someone to shoot play with.

Well, I'd be a fan if they did something for those that were here from the beginning. Two unique skins would be completely possible:

1- Founders camo
2- "Veterans" camo for those that were here since pre-release
3- Achievement camos for the really really hard ones (read: Death Star, etc.)

Then, as the OP said, you still make it so that you have to spend MC on it. It is a good will gesture to the community and PGI still makes money. Hell, you could make it so that you had a Founders and Veterans version of each House/Clan and make even more money. It is a nice business model, for sure.

I like the concept but I have to say decals would be much easier & more likely.

A decal for each faction(one for getting every faction), tier, badges, etc.

Patterns for so many mechs takes a lot of time on PGI's part. That's why they aren't creating them much. Decals would be the way to go. It'd also be a nice way to launch the feature (which is about 3 years behind...)

I'd be for it.

Unlocks don't bother me. maybe I'm old fashioned, but goals, and working for things, instead of expecting everything provided for me, is just part of my world view (which appears to make me an anachronism), and as long as everyone has equal opportunities (aka nothing needed is locked behind paywalls, etc) then I realyl don't see the issue.

It's liek the people who whine about "having to grind" the events. Yes, I suppose if you want everything, you do. Welcome to the real world. Or you could just play the game, and view all the extra perks you naturally progress through a long the way as just that....nice perks. It ain't like any of it is mandatory to play the game, or succeed at it.

Hmmmm .. Veteran camos and decals ... But that would require PGI to actually care about the players, and not just their bank.

Sure, why not.

Unlocking the privilege to purchase a vanity item is no big deal.

There should be a KDR decal and Win/Loss decal that updates dynamically.

Yeah, real smart, find another way to piss off people playing the game.

The last thing this game needs is more limited content, for the people who bought the right mech pack, joined at a certain time or participated in the right event.

I'll take a reward for the grinding any day of the week, even if it favours the neckbeards who play MWO for 20 hours per week.

Ideally, I'd want some skill based visual rewards (skins, deckles, cockpit items, whatever), but neither PGI nor the MWO players are typically fond of rewards that favour the "tryhards" because then people's feelings get hurt. As far as I remember, we only have 2 skill based achievements out of 500. Ace of Spades and Disconnect Star.
