I guess I was foolishly under the assumption MWO tried to balance the tonnage for each match?

3 non-Kodiaks and two of those are 100T anyway.

The matches I had (in group queue as was mentioned there were issues there) going up against seven Kodiaks really put the teams off balance. It just seemed kind of dumb to play last night if you didn't have one or didn't want to play an assault.
Solo queue wasn't nearly as bad for me though. I just found it difficult to use a lighter mech going up against so many assaults. Just so much firepower hitting my medium/light. Never ran into such a thing before.

With 4 people in a group you can run 3 kodiaks and a 40 tonner. Since I don't have the kodiak due to sucking at assaults and being grossly underemployed (but hey, better than sucking on the government ***) I was in the light mech *****/scout role in my group all night. Lights are good against assaults.. when there aren't 8 of the damn things all grouped together. I eventually swapped to ECM raven just so I wouldn't just evaporate while scouting and could at least make a little money by tagging for the lurmdiaks.

From what I saw the Kodiak pilots we went up against were not timid. They pushed pretty hard and just ran right over us. It was comical a little bit but also pretty frustrating just because the balance was so far off.

It's a pity PGI are just so incompetent at matchmaking. I quite enjoy the Mech battle gameplay, but crazy imbalanced stuff like this - on a night when it should have been easy to match Kodiaks against other Kodiaks - just ruins the experience.

8 Kodiaks but 10 assaults all together.
5 Kodiaks our side
3 Kodiaks on enemy side plus an Atlas and a Banshee

Part of what makes Mechwarrior fun, or what makes it more fun is tonnage balance. How stupid is it for lights and mediums to go up against a group of assaults? And you're right - as many people that were playing Kodiaks - make all of them play against each other or at least with other assaults.
But I like dropping into these matches "assuming" the balance is going to be somewhat close. Actually gives each class the ability to do something in each match.
