I think a lot of it is muscle memory. You get better at a game because you develop twitch muscle memory from repeating the same action over and over and over again. After a while of playing the same game, your movements just naturally do what you want them to do without thinking about it. That is why you can whip the mechs torso around and land a shot without much effort or thought about your aim.

It's also probably why a person who plays one mech all the time has slightly better aim than a person who plays different mechs with different quirks and movement mechanics.

Anyway, Overwatch is faster and it's mechanics are different. You just need more playtime with it to train your brain and develop that muscle memory for Overwatch. After a while, you should be a crack shot in that game too if you practice enough.

Now I don't know if getting old does effect any of this. Maybe our reaction time slows or maybe it takes longer to train our brains to develop muscle memory.

Anyway, I wouldn't panic. Play Overwatch for a few weeks and you should notice playing the game feeling like second nature to you (as MWO does now).

Edit: P.S. I hadn't played a shooter other than MWO in quite a while. I just bought Doom a few days ago and my aim was abysmal! I kept over-shooting my aim because it was far quicker than I had been used to. After about a 6 hours with the game though, I can already notice my aim has improved drastically. I'm sure as I beat the campaign and dabble in the Multiplayer, I will play even better. Just need to practice.

I had around 375 hours in CSGO before getting into MWO, just played in casual but was really fond of twitch shooting with the AWP. When I try to go back it just seems so basic and boring, a bunch of guys run down a hallway, one shot to kill someone.. it just doesn't do it for my anymore. It's definitely easier to hit people in MWO, but the tactics/strategies/builds/maps add so much more for me.

Nah, been having lots of fun on DOOM. Mostly I have a hard time feeling like playing anything shooter related that isn't MWO because it doesn't feel fun at all to just bunnyhop, run and gun, auto target bs.

Doom is a blast. It feels old school (more run-and-gun and less hiding behind cover). It's funny how what's old can feel new again.

I never personally considered Mechwarrior a shooter in the traditional sense. Different skill set I guess. Most shooters the last 10+ years have been rather repetitive and boring for me, but holy crap have I enjoyed Doom. Took some time to knock the rust off.

Actually no. I have trouble playing other shooters after a good hour or two on Warframe.
That game has movement and play control down. Love that game.

Love me some MWO to just to be clear. =)

I agree,
After getting bored with MWO I moved to warframe with full intention of coming back for Kodiak release (bought the full package). Having so much fun with that game I haven't come back yet, would like to try out the Kodiak before they get nerded to the ground. After no mech sales and the Archer, we're going to adjust their quirks, oh no we are not, then oops emergency quirk them. Have loved the battle tech games since the late 80's I think it was. Not sure what I'm going to do at this point. May wait for the other packs I purchased to release then maybe have enough mechs to keep my interest for a bit.

I don't find much trouble in playing other shooters. Whenever I play Cod 4 from time to time, I still top the scoreboards. I've been doing fine in Overwatch as well.

I agree. I think of MWO sort of the same way as flying in War Thunder. It is more about favorable positioning and anticipating the flow of things rather than flicking the mouse and relying on outshooting people.

Welcome to the land of slower reflexes and poorer eyesight my friend.

I try to comfort myself by enjoying my satisfying income, up to date computer that I paid for myself and update whenever I want, and all the other toys I own.

Every game type has it's own feel and rhythm. Despite being classified as a FPS, MWO is somewhat slower in tempo, more calculating. I used to play a lot of FPS type games, Counter Strike, Unreal Tournament, Halo, ect, but I have always enjoyed the MechWarrior games the most. I can't say one game influences my play style in another so much. It's more about what type of game I want to play. I don't play many quick twitch FPS games anymore simply because the new ones out now don't seem to offer much to me in the way of innovation. It's the same stuff with more polygons, more filters and better textures.

I used to play CS:S a lot. One of my most played FPS games. Then I left FPS for a while before I started playing MWO.

When I tried to play CS:GO after 2 years of MWO, it was like playing with 500 ping compared to other players. Granted, I only tried a couple of days. But my twitch reaction was absurdly poor compared to those sneaky russian CS:GO players. I'm a fricking jedi in MWO, compared to my performance in CS:GO.

I'm having a blast in Overwatch. I've only ever played one character (big heavy tanky chick with short pink hair that shields people)
(No I haven't played very much lol)

But it's fun...
MWO hasn't ruined me.. I guess I just kept playing other games other than just MWO. I took a long break and played Planetside 2 for a while...

I dunno, I don't enjoy much FPS games... I do jump on Borderlands quite a bit, on a Playstation with a control pad even, not much issue going back and forth.

I find the art style has more effect on my "vision" in games like that then anything else, some types of art and lighting effects just make me feel like I can;t see.

Only other FPS I really ever enjoyed was Battlefield 1942, and that was hardly a twitch shooter, more like a giant rock paper scissors with guns game. Of course, most people were on equal footing with the internet back 15 years ago lol. Twitch all you want, when everyone has stupid high ping fluctuations going on 30% of your hits are luck.

Never tried PLanetside with its mega maps and persistant giant battles. I always wondered if MWO went to a style like that for FW if it would go over better.

Only thing I've noticed is that I now hit R every time I see someone in other FPS games. This leads to me dying due to reloading a lot.

Planetside was way worse. I used to play the hell out of the first one, and I remember one time while driving home from work nearly swerving off the road because I thought an oncoming garbage truck was an enemy Sunderer. Not even joking. I took a break after that.

I can't stand twitch games; they degenerate so fast and once you reach a certain age you basically have no hope of competing against the kids with the insane reflexes. Top that off with hacks and other crap that is far more common in non-MWO games, and I couldn't be paid to play most of them at this point.

Actually I've found just the opposite. Playing MWO made me a better player in another FPS that has gundams which are much more simple to pilot.

I know how you feel mate.

Just found out about this. It might be more up your alley. (if you don't know already). Will be downloading and playing the new campaign just as soon as I get home.

I did a few designs for them a few years back, glad to see it still going. The design group seemed to be getting pressure cooker tense, so I bowed out, but might have to look into it again.

Not really having that trouble.

I took a break from MWO for ESO, which is pretty fast in PvP compared to MWO. Took a little bit to adjust to the pace but not much. Came back to MWO to see what all the hullabaloo was about with the Kodiak, and it took me a couple of matches to re-adjust to ponderous stompy robots.
