I've noticed that in scouting missions that the meta is for the defenders to lazily walk the map looking for the scouting party until the smoke for the pick-up ship spawns. Then they just walk over and camp the pick-up zone to wait for their prey to try and pick a fight.

So my question is this: Is there really any point in playing scouting missions, or is this just the new meta?

Well, they're kinda useful.

But not when Long Tom gets activated-then people stop dropping on the particular planet.

It's a way, in theory, to compensate for your faction getting rolled in 12v12, and to allow smaller groups to participate in CW more easily. For example, if your faction can't get ground in a direct fight, it might be a smarter move to focusing on dropping in scouting long enough to get the long tom, which will highly increase the odds of their success on the 12v12 invasion front.

Or it would if people kept dropping Invasion mode.

Instead what you see a lot of is one side will scout until they gain control of the Long Tom.

The faction without the LT won't drop Invasion against it, and very often won't scout to recapture it. Meanwhile, the team
with the LT really doesn't want to ghost drop its way to victory (what with a 10minute wait between matches). As a result, FW activity stops and the planet doesn't change hands.

thats why we finally need only oen palnet per border and reduced battlefields so people can't hide.

But I guess they would then simply quit FW at all, which is sad, if thsi were an open world open RVR game, but it's now :/

All this mewling over the alleged point of 4v4's. To me it's pretty straight forward;

The point is to give clan planets with their broken stormcrow steak boats.

scouting is another band aid solution to make up for the failed design of FP. PGI decided that because casuals were being rolled by premade 12 mans that they thought casuals would like to grind for intel on scouting missions so that they can get long tom to even the odds against skilled players (LOL!)...not even considering that first of all no one wants to grind, second of all that they would just get stomped by pre made 4 mans and third of all that players are scouting with mechs that aren't even scout mechs...griffin a scout mech? Stormcrow a scout mech?? NO

Can we get rid of that kill stealer already? At least nerf it significantly so that those who like to collect those twirly dings can keep collecting..

It's a total waste of time to drop on a planet where long tom is active, cos there usually is nothing to play there. I drop in mwo to shoot mechs, to play PvP - not for some automated turret doing the fighting for me.
Rather play solitaire than watch the dingadong doing all the work.
