If you want dakka try the King Crab or Mauler. Both have solid ballistic options. If you don't mind buying a mech pack the Kodiak KDK-3 is a quad, UAC nightmarem

The Mauler can also serve as an LRM or SRM platform (the Mauler's torso twist and speed makes it better suited as a second line fighter, though) and has some great all around quirks. The Stalker is also a good missile platform. While LRM assaults are generally frowned upon the Stalker has the room to fit a generous mix of SRMs and lasers.

Lastly, the mech which is arguably the king of Assaults is the Atlas. The AS7-S can pack several SRMs along side an AC20 and 2 Mlas while leaving it's arms to serve as shields (allowing it to zombie). As an added plus it has amazing defensive quirks.

Which one of those SHOULD you buy?

I'd vote Stalker or Mauler (in to particular order). Both give you options to explore and both serve as a solid chassis.

I can advocate for the Banshee which were my first Assault. Its tough, fast and with great hitboxes, nice convergence when all weapons are in torso, good hardpoints which can sit pretty far up on the left and right torsos and big engine size. It dosent have much regarding missile hardpoints, only ONE on the variants that allow it. Which are the 3S and La Malinche, the very same two also are the only variants that have hardpoints in arms.

Only drawback IMO are limited aiming against fast mechs and/ or high positioned targets, since the majority of the Banshees have torso mounted weapons, but its a small price to pay.
The Banshee have pretty good torso twist and durability even when not at the same level of structure buffs that the Atlas got (which needed them alot more than the otherwise though Banshee. Also, as with other assaults, its not XL friendly unless you know what you are doing and want to specialise in that kind of risk and reward.

If you only want missiles and ballistics. The I can also advocate the Mauler. Especially the 1R can give you some great amount of missiles, SRM and/ or LRM. If you only want dakka, then go for the MX90 variant.

I would go for the Kodiak Package: 20$ for 3 assaults is quite good. Big range of possible weapon setup. I really enjoy them a lot.

Stalker: Taught, some great missile builds and excellent energy hardpoints

Zeus: It's a tanky Assault that moves like a big heavy, been overshadowed a little by the Marauder pocket assault.

Awesome: Wait for the re-scale. I'm hoping it puts the Awesome on par with the Zues as it should be.

I was actually attacked by a Spooky Atlas while mastering my Wolfhound on Crimson Straight and yes, turning around thinking you getting shot by at by Arctic Cheetah or Raven only to see a 100 ton Atlas on your *** gives you one hell of a scare!

If you want to get good in an assault, buy a crappy one IE: Executioner. It has low arms and fairly low torso hard points, which means hill popping isn't so easy (you do have MASC, and with the speed tweak you get 90kph out of it). It has crap for armor which means if you're being the most aggressive assault you're likely going to take alot of hits, which forces you to torso twist away and use cover properly. etc.
The EXE is one of the crappiest mechs in the game. 2 CLPL and 4 to 5 ERMEDL is a "good" loadout for it and if you apply the above it can do well despite it's massive size and other weaknesses.

EXE is THE nimblest assault mech around. 18 tons of armour is "crap armour"?

I dunno, the EXE has a better torso profile than its cousin, the Banshee.

Perhaps, it being crap for so long is why players like Better Call Saul, or Juju for that matter loved running one, and still ended up sh***** all over group queue.

The height and low hardpoints are big disadvantages, but 69.7 kph, medium like agility, bursts of 90 kph with MASC? It's not a bad mech. Definitely not.

Aside from its maneuverability, it's not a great mech. I accumulated a 6:1 K/D combined across 3 variants of it while working to unlocking the master perk, I know it doesn't completely suck. It does however force you to be a better pilot instead of hiding behind a wall of weapons (short of 7 - 8 MPL builds).

I do have to say, though, after everything, is that the King Crab is still good fun, even if it's not the king of ballistics any longer. Dual AC-20 is sure to punch a hole in someone's components.
