I've been tier 5 since the ranking system started and I'm curious what formula is used to decide if your rank goes up or down.
I've had decent games doing around 350 damage with a couple kills, components and assists but, if my team ends up losing my skill goes down.
I've also had fairly weak games pulling only 150 damage and not getting kills but, my team won so, my skill goes up.
I have seen people say they can take a new account straight up to top tier but, I have stayed stagnant at tier 5 this whole time.

Its based on match score (Note: match score, not damage), and winning is the most important criteria:
Here are the match score ranges and what happens to your PSR
On Loss:
100 <= large drop
101-250 = medium drop
251-400 = even
401 >= small rise

On Win:
100 <= even
101-250 = small rise
251-400 = medium rise
401>= large rise

New accounts get a boost on the PSR change values during the cadet bonus phase, which is how experienced players can take a new account up several tiers very quickly.

It does change. But like MrJeffers said, it takes winning. Consecutively, continuously.

My mentality, don't worry about it. Just go out, and shoot the red targets.

High damage numbers seems to be the most significant thing after winning from what I have seen. If you do 100 damage or less, in a winning match, it is likely you will get an = instead of an Up arrow.

How does pilot ranking work?

It doesn't.

An XP bar that only really blocks advancement if you're either incredibly unlucky or generally lose more games than you win.

That's because 1/2 of your damage value is added to match score so it's the largest contributor to the match score. 100 damage = 50 match score. 500 Damage = 250 match score, etc.

If you want to progress that XP bar OP, simply be a consistent top damage player in all of your games, your looking at consistently doing an average of 300-500+ in every game.

The people that are insecure, and need to be loved, go look at me, I'm in the top blah blah of a niche game.

Play lots and do damage and don't hide behind walls corner poking I guess.

Ah no they sit in the second row, and snipe until the team collapses around them then they cry scrubs, because they didn't help absorb the incoming damage.

Thanks for the answers. The only reason I really care is because I've heard the ques are split between 1-4 and 5-10, is this true?

Not at all. You can be matched with people within 2 tiers of you. So 1->3 1<-2->4 1<-3->5 etc, etc. In group queue, it takes an average tier per group.

Don't be too quick to want to increase your PSR though. I was having great matches in tier 3, of course I was teamed with everyone and against every tier. But those were the best matches for everyone from what I saw. Moved to tier 2 and I lose a lot more of my matches than I win.

Wasn't that long ago my win/loss ratio was +20. Not I'm -30. We're talking about a two week span. And yesterday was one of, if not the worst day I've ever had. I believe I lost about 12 games in a row and the best match was my team getting six kills.... Once. Otherwise they were stomps. I don't know what has happened but something had changed and it usually seems the team I'm on struggles badly.

Anyway enjoy the lower tiers because I really don't think it gets any better. I actually thought it would because I expected the team work to go way up getting myself out of playing with lower tier players. I've noticed no change as far as team work goes and I'm fighting tougher opponents. It wouldn't be so bad if my losses actually affected my PSR. I really haven't felt like I've done well enough for my PSR to increase in tier 2... But sure enough it consistently rises.

PSR basically serves to keep new and inexperienced folks like you (new seals as we call them) from getting seal clubbed so frequently by those like myself that have played for years and played thousands and thousands of matches that you give up playing altogether.

Being new isn't bad btw. I love helping out new players and am happy to team up with them (gonna be playing a fair bit this week if you wanna play send me a message). However, MWO has a pretty steep learning curve so while you're learning it's best that you aren't playing against the meta l33t hardcore types running fuilly kitted out metamechs.

XP bar

Maybe that explains things I have over 14,000 drops since I started in June 2014

As I moved up in tier my kill/death dropped like a rock now it’s down at .83
