Why? Yeah HOTAS is cool and I could gush over the multi weapons control. My main reason? Because looking out of a cockpit with a headset on calling contacts while using a flight stick and throttle like the books, is just way more fun than flicking a mouse around and typing on a keyboard.

Yep, I've got a X-52 that's almost 10 years old... It has served me brilliantly in MW4... But, it just doesn't work in Living Legends... because the mechs don't have mechanical properties...

What do I mean by this?

Well, you move the mouse, and the mech turns as fast as the mouse moves.... In MW4, MW3, and every Mechwarrior game before it, (to the best of my knowledge) each chassis had its own limits... Some mechs torso-twisted faster than others. Some where slower. So having a mouse was, in-fact, a disadvantage... (except MW3 with the free-reticle)

Trying to use my X52 on Living Legends is a nightmare... I'm either much slower than everyone else, or have absolutely no accuracy... I really hope this game takes a cue from its predecessors and incorporates this aspect into the game, so that it is not so much a game of point and click...

Mechwarrior 4 I know played a hellva lot better with a joystick, i did play and beat hte campaign like 4 times w/ MnKB but joystick made it a breeze and pinpoint attacks and what not were actully easier with a joystick, considering you have to coordinate the hull with the legs...which is kinda clumsy to do with a MnKB...

MWO looks like it will play far better with a MnKB..

My one question is how do we work weapon fire groups with MnKB? I never could quite get with the program of assigning weapon groups to my mouse or keyboard...it was insanely easy wuith a joystick, fire group 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,....firing them was as easy as pressing a Joystick button.....with a MnKB how is that going to work?

Depends on the mouse...

I Play WoT mouse (the 17 key Naga) and keyboard. WASD for hull (legs) and mouse for turret (torso). Turret is much slower than the mouse, you learn to adapt. And even if you don't have a fancy schmancy MMO mouse the weapon groups in previous games could be bound where ever you wanted. Have it set to fire with left click and cycle groups with another button, what ever worked.

And for those that say the 12 side buttons are overkill for WoT, I use 9 of them. 1,2,3 ammo select, 4,5,6 consumable select, 7 PPT for Mumble/TS, 11,12 mouse DPI up and down. The mouse is awesome. Highly recommend it for anything. (No I don't work for Razer)

Will probably use a mouse and keyboard for a few reasons.

- No extra equipment on my desk
- I don't have to switch to a new set of equipment to do other things on my PC if I tab out of MWO
- My method of controlling a game has zero impact on immersion. I'll always know I'm playing a game on my PC regardless of how I'm doing it
- I have no other games that I can apply a stick to at the moment
- Playing Mercenaries back in the day with a Sidewinder 3D Pro felt clunky as all hell and mice have a high level of precision now

To me, piloting a mech with a joystick seems like driving in a tank game with one - unnecessary given the other options.

sad i know

but i'm poor :)

Honestly though, as much as it it feels wrong to use a mouse, I'll probably try both ways and see if the mouse precision outweighs the "precision 2" immersion factor

That sure is a pretty joystick. I use an original Microsoft precision pro. I bought a X52, tried it for a few weeks, HATED the response from it, and returned to my old tried and true. I'll use it until it just won't kill things anymore.

I still have and love my ms sw pre pro. love that thing. has a little rudder drift right if Im not holding it but man I love that stick. I bought a hotas x only tried it once on the mw4 mercs free dl. so far I like it. I cant find where to remap the zoom on it though I hate the thrid trigger placement for my second weapons grouping. all in all though I prefer the hotas over the stick. now I need to set up a centralized keyboard ready for commands. so excited :)

This will not be a twitch friendly game.

Just an educated guess.

I agree with this.

A Mech's torso twist has limited speed. Some Mechs twist faster than others but it has nothing to do with how fast you move the mouse or turn the joystick. People wanting to twitch fire will most likely be suprised when they find that they can't. A higher DPI mouse will have better accuracy but, when you use that joystick for a while you'll learn to make it accurate as well.

When I dusted off the old Logitech Freedom I thought it was all kinds of hard to aim with after I reinstalled MW4. However after an hour or so I was putting shots where I wanted them to go.

Cool joysticks with throttles and rudders are for people who truly love the immersion, the total melding of pilot to mech, and to get called cheaters. (Mickey) Mouse and keyboarders are the ones making the accusations. Any further questions? Save them for after your test on the first day of release :).

i would just like to say that freelancer(some space sim) did a rather nice job of making a mouse feel like a joystick =D

One of my favourite games of all time!

AS for the original topic, I plan on using both, kind of a best of both worlds sort of deal.

I can stomp along feeling all cool and in control while scouting about, and when things get hairy, the mouse will get a workout.

Had an arguement with someone on another website about the game. Said things like joysticks will never be competative, a mouse is far superior for pinpoint attacks like torsos and legs. Just tore into joysticks in a long tirade like I and everyone else planning on using a joystick had NO idea they were inferior.

Remember the days before killstreaks, headshots, quickscoping, e-sports, constant min maxing, premade vs pug beatdowns, kill/death and win/loss ratios?

What happened to playing a game for fun over the last 10 years?

When did playing a game as a fun simulator become an everything rides on your performance stress fest.

I'll play with the mouse for a bit - but SOON I'll be rolling out the :

never discount a pilot who is more at one with his battlemech and joystick/throttle/pedals for he may be far more deadly than a pilot using a mouse/keyboard. ALSO, I point out, the fact, that if you watch THIS video at 0:45 seconds or so, you see, guess what, a JOYSTICK in an ATLAS. I think it is safe to say, that, they are in the battle mechs and, for players who prefer it, immersion. Also, because I am feeling geekiy I show you this, the cockpit of the Eurofighter:

Posted Image

in this cockpit, you see a joystick. This is one of Europe's most advanced fighter aircraft. and again, in the video I linked, you see a joystick in a war machine from about 1000 years after this Eurofighter Typhoon.

Ya, naga ftw - that's what i'm going to start with... then move to the X52 - we shall see which holds my attention the best.

My understanding is that a mouse would be usable to aim the arm mounted weapons. My tentative ideal setup would be to use the mouse for the arm mounted aiming and my joystick for the torso twist/throttle/etc.

It might be a bit challenging to map the buttons but I have enough on both devices I think I could make it work. If I off-hand the joystick I can still reach 9 buttons (counting a thumb-stick as 4 directional buttons) and my mouse has 7 buttons & 2 wheels. Map throttle to one of the wheels, single-weapon scroll to another one, and various weapon groups/jump jets/crouch/shutdown/etc controls to the 16 available buttons.

If they'd gimp the mouse control severely I'd use a joystick with this. It's the only way I see joystick users competing and I would rather use a joystick honestly. For some reason though the level of whining that would ensue if mouse control was gimped would be epic.

What I think this all boils down to is: did you grow up playing computer games and using a joystick to do this? if yes, then, you are probably like me, in your 30's or older, and are pretty much wired to use a joystick. Did you grow up gaming on consoles like the PS2/3 or XBOX/360, yes that / is there to distinguish between the original and the 360, if you didnt know there WAS just an XBOX, then, wow, I just suddenly felt very old lol. ANYWAY, if you grew up on the newer consoles or PC games that did NOT need a mouse, then, you are more likely 20-25 at most, and are wired to use a mouse. Its a matter of age I think, and how we spent our youths.

This is what I used to play through mechwarrior 1-3. Sadly had to ditch it by the time 4 came out. God but feeling your joystick shake every time you ran up the speed or took a hit made you feel like the mech was really yours.

no it will not. but I still prefer a mouse even though I'm sacrificing convenience and ergonomics for precision and speed.

that said though I still think trackball would be the superior manual aiming device in an actual mech, simply because most of your aiming would be done on a projected 2d hud. not only that but they take less space, letting you centralize most functions to one hand leaving room for more on the other.

in fact i've always believed having fire key on the opposite hand of your aim key is the most optimal way, in quake i would aim with mouse and fire with spacebar because the firing movement could jiggle the mouse slightly if it wasnt seated firmly in your palm, and even then it could.
