The problem was trying to force BT rulesets into a FPS.

Indeed, but still, the spirit of the fluff/lore (not necessarily the TT game) should be kept because it's the most important. Weisman and co. over there at HBS don't have hesitation to change the TT rules even though their upcoming game is very close to the TT at how it's gonna be played. They do that in order for the game to be fun to play while still feeling like BattleTech.

What about localized quirks to spice things up? I think I read about it somewhere in the forums.

It would influence boating by getting different cool down times, range and heat for the same weapons on different locations. This would affect convergence too.

Theme is important but its way more open to interpretation than rule sets. Think of the difference between Eurogaming and Amrican Gaming. Or if you are into pnp RPGs, how White Wolf rebranded Vampire the Masquerade into Vampire the Requiem.
White Wolf cut a lot of meta-story out and left it vague for the players to write their own meta but still kept the flavors and themes for all the various factions.

As someone who never got into the novels, the background lore provided in the tech manuals was enough for me. That and which factions favored what tactics and such.

I really dont care about the characters or legendary units.

Each faction should get its own theme, look, favored startegy/tactics

The lore also (gasp) likely needs rebranded and updated.

I would even shorten it to say that lore should only be the storyline and images created with rule sets being mechanics specific to a specific game medium. Even then a story is a story, the reality of the story is if it is able to be shared by as many folks as possible. Sometimes this means changing the surface to allow more folks to understand the meaning and unfortunately this also always upsets others or makes others have to become flexible to keep a hold on the original. In many ways video games are just the printing press to many board games camp fire settings.

Yeah PGI is not considering sized hardpoints. However, PGI is known to backtrack a lot of what they stated. And as you said, it will stop some, but not all of the stupidity. Well, some is better than none, and quirks can take care of the rest. Let's see how the GH v.2 works, come December.
