I'm a longtime player/lurker thats come back from hiatus. Having a blast in solo pug queue, feels balanced, i'm winning a bit more than losing due to starting off in Tier 4 (i stopped playing almost 1.5 years ago). I'm trying to get some of my friends back into the game. We used to drop in 4 mans on 8v8 ages ago and had a HUGE blast, now i think i heard that PUGs get seperated from groups of all size to protect em, but im curious.

If i'm pairing or trioing up with a buddy or two do we get throw into group queue to pad units who dont have a full company? Or do we get thrown in a higher tier of PUG queue, or how do things work now?

I long for the days of 8v8 and smaller maps, i just get soooooooo lost these days on the new maps.

The population in group is so low you will see anything and anybody.

Solo players are in their own queue and will never be in a match with any players in a group of any size in quick play.

Players in a group of any size will be placed in the grouped players queue in quick play and will never have a solo player in any match they play in the quick play grouped queue.

Overall the match maker is designed to operate with the solo queue and has some difficulty with making balanced matches for groups. In order to compensate for advantages good communications and cooperation creates groups have a max weight cap for the total weight they can bring. This weight cap decreases with the number of players in the group.

The end results are a team with a larger group will have a lower combined mech weight cap than a team composed of several small groups. This of course has issues if you want to form a smaller group and not use your max tonnage allotment since by not doing so you may have disadvantaged your own team by not maxing out your weight allotment and thus give up an advantage the matchmaker assumes is in use when it makes the match.

Grouped players also have their PSR values averaged instead of weighted individually.

Oh man.... i dont wanna wait forever to get into games, but i realy want to play with my buddy/buddies. Solo quick play is always a quick drop for me now, but duoing we're gonna go back to the forever waiting times which i remember so angrily just before my hiatus (oh and goddamn poptarts too).

But surely PUGs solo queuers have to be thrown into group play... i mean to get exactly 12 peeps per side with varying sizes of groups will be horrendous unless pop is huge.

Nope. It matches the groups available to make 12s. No solo players end up in group queue.

A group of 4 or less will usually find a match fairly quickly. (Tonnage restrictions apply on larger groups, and a lot of players avoid larger groups for that reason.)

I am still pretty sure that you get punished for taking over 25% less in total drop weight. Pretty common to hear horror stories from folks who jump in with a group of 3 light mechs. I could be wrong though.

I think the player base is so small that PGI may have to consider merging the ques.

I dont have any hard info, but it seems que times are back to where they were prior to the steam release.
