So the basic skill tree unlocking follows the path of:

3 variants of 1 mech basic'd = Elite unlock
3 variants of 1 mech elite'd = Master unlock

However I know there are special rules involving the weight classes and I can't find this info via google search. A friend asked me about it (having recently come back since...I want to say beta?) and I actually don't remember since I usually XP all the variants I have anyway.

finish elites on 3 mechs of a weight class to open master. Whatever chassis or variant combo.

It's actually:
  • 3 variants of a chassis all basics unlocked opens elite.
  • 3 variants of a weight class all elites unlocked opens master.

nope!

3 basic'd variants opens elite.... master opens up as soon as you complete elite on a variant.
You don't need to elite 3 mechs to open master.

Yes you do. The difference to Basic is that it doesn't have to be a variant of the same Chassis.

^ This.

The 3 variants in weight class can be any 'Mech in-class. Actually more flexible than all on the same chassis, as it allows you to focus on the variants you like.

Not sure what you are saying.

When you buy 3 variants of a mech, unlocking basic opens elite for all 3 of them... but unlocking master on a variant only requires completing elite on just that one variant.

Only if you already have elited mechs of the same class.

If you've already elited a full set of one 65-ton chassis, and then start doing another, the second chassis will go right to master from elite without having to elite all 3 variants of that one chassis.

Going from basic to elite requires 3 of the same chassis... from elite to master only requires 3 of the same class.

oh... i see.

yes that is correct.
