What is it for?

And I've mentioned the idea of adding NPC units like armor etc to defend or attack planets. No one has ever commented on these. What is the story here?

Fee? Shouldn't be one.
Need more info. (Breaking contracts is another story).

I think you pay for sending out a call to arms to the broader community.

1,000,000 c-bills to send out a call to arms???

So Comstar is basically the interplanetary division of AT&T.

I'm thinking that's a crock either way. :(
Stop paying it; even collectively 12 players probably barely earn enough to cover that.

I'm the leader of a merc unit, and I have never had to pay to do a mission. Point of being a merc is to get paid.

Some of us even talked about it. At the end of a mission, it will have on the right-hand side, -100,000.
Sorry, I meant 100,000 C-Bills, not 1,000,000 C-Bills.

On the screen where it says "rewards" before the final stat screen.

Based on the population of a given faction there will be boni or mali to the payout of a contract.

Boni and mali can be as high as +/-50%

You don't pay a fee. You don't pay for a call to arms.

Current modifications to contracts, and faction populations can be checked on the Faction Play screen when clicking "Contracts".

So the modifier shows the difference between reg earnings and the modifier?

Since I've worked for Steiner once before the modifiers and Liao pretty much all the time I never noticed it among all the plus incomes.

Liao pays good. Real good. Always has for mwo. In lore it takes real good care of successful mercs. Not so successful, well if you're not good then you wouldn't want to work for Chancellor Romano Liao.

Liao: "Are you done?"
"Yes, your excellency."
Liao: "You sure?"
"Yes, absolutely."
Liao: "Good. Somebody shoot him before he can speak again."

When I first started reading the novels, I wondered how someone could be working with Maximilian Liao. It seemed like he was the "bad guy", along with Michael Hasek Davion, Kurita and Marik. I do like Theodore Kurita so I have scratched him from the "bad guy" list.

I finally made it to the clan invasion books and it is painfully obvious that Romano Liao is nuttier than a squirrel ****.

There are many good and bad guys on each side.

MechCommander 2 starts you as a merc unit working for the Steiners during the collapse of the Steiner-Davion alliance. First against bandits and terrorists, then Liao. Despite how shady Liao seems, the story continues and it turns out the whackjob is the Davion commander you had been working for (whom at the start of the game announced his forces are allied with Katrina Steiner-Davion, referred to as Archon Katrina Steiner [note no Davion hyphen]).

So the stereotypical good guy side hosted the evil doers this time, at least until the commander was denounced.

Standard successful contract pays 250,000. When you first sign up, there may be a +/- modifier based on comparative population levels in each faction.

The amount is deducted from or added to the standard contract sum. So if you are seeing a 100,000 deduction, that works out to a -40% modifier.

The modifier may be different the next time you sign up for another contract.

On contracts with the new system I am only seeing 7 day contracts. Used to get 28 day contracts before Phase 3.

Any way to get a longer contract or is Chancellor Romano Liao just being stingy?

I have been reading the book for the tabletop game and it refers to the civil war and the Word of Blake but I have not made it far enough to know what went on there. I am reading Blood Legacy now and I have to say, for now, I really like the clan society. That may change though as I read on.

I was worried about losing money trying to be a merc. I am glad you guys clarified it for me.

All Merc contracts are now for 7 days only .... not sure this change was a good thing

Me neither. Sometimes locking in a pay rate is nice. Though it makes less-active groups have less efffect on revenues.

Some groups are very active with leaders that have real lives, so the group might play but can't hold a contract due to leader infrequency.

Wouldn't this be solved by simply allowing a set of permissions to specific assigned officers or have a checkbox to automatically renew until unchecked?

We're talking PGI here. That solution is simple, easy to understand and addresses the actual problem.

In all seriousness though that would solve it.

Actually that has a short coming. Longer contracts gave better pay rates before. The longest, permanent pledge of allegiance (now Loyalist), gave the most.

Now, loyalists have the old tree and mercs have a new tree.

Course I can't tell if we have the high or low pay 'cause I get the high income modifier on the ultra rare case I can get into a fight (I refuse to go in solo while my mic is broken).
