Will MechWarrior Online come with or require any DRM, Spyware, Update Services or any other Potentially Unwanted Programs?

Will it install anything which runs in the background even when the game isn't running?

if it takes a page from WOT (which I imagine it will) the updating will be done through the launcher, and there should be no background programs.

also... DRM? why would you need DRM for a f2p game?

Of course. This game will use DRM to make sure nobody plays this game without purchasing it as PGI has to protect their product. Furthermore they'll also install loads off spyware on your computer so they can get tons of info about you which they will sell for further profits.

About other unwanted programs, it comes with some nice Trojans, which will hook your computer onto PGI's botnet which they'll use to hack the US government. No profits involved there, that's just for fun.

They may not need DRM, but anti-cheat software could be installed without your knowledge (although it would likely only run when the game runs). And many software like Steam and Origin (and others) collect your personal data when running and send it back to the company. While I hope MWO is above that kind of shady behavior, it is so commonplace now you have to wonder.

Why do people complain so much about DRMs anyway? I don't see what difference it makes really...

Some DRM programs like SecuROM can degrade performance on your machine, cause problems if you install on a new machine or change the hardware in your current one, and generally sit in the background taking up system resources. Beyond that, some folks just really like knowing what's going on with every process in their computer (which makes sense - it's like people wandering around in your house)

It's a free to play game. I don't think they will care if you pirate it. As for Spyware... I seriously doubt it. As for updating, it will, as previously said, most likely do that from the launcher. That's what every other game does.

Anti-cheat software is going to be running server-side, they've said. It's easier and more efficient that way. Fiddle with the client all you want, but your 'mech's movement and weapons profiles aren't on your end. :P

Yes they'll have something for anti-cheating, no they won't talk about it. They won't give any details about what they're doing to tip off the people trying to break it.

PS - They also said the processing is all done server side, they don't trust the clients which is a great start.

You know thats a complete lie don't you?
And Steam has opt out procedures with regards to personal data..infact i think there was a whole other thread on this, but it appears people can't read privacy policies all that well.

Now other companies that have links to valves sites such as EA, is another story but once your on EA's site your no longer under valves privacy policy.

Spyware should always be opt-in not opt-out. Hopefully MWO won't have any Spyware at all.

Has there been any official word on these PUPs in MWO?

It's DRM is always online because it's a free to play multiplayer title. There is no single player to the game though so that DRM does not apply.

DRM is a bit of a stretch.. but sure.. you're going to need a registered and authenticated account in order to play the game... it's free to play anyway.. so.. uhm.. DRM in the current colloquial sense? No.. but technically yes.. Digital Rights Management will be in effect.

As for Adware/Spyware/Malware.. uhm.. maybe you should leave now if you are that ignorant/paranoid.

As for anti-cheat background stuff.. maybe.. but then.. that's part of playing the game.

This reminds of something Paul said.. "This thread makes me want to kick puppies." - Sums it up nicely.
