You need to be a loyalist to be able to earn faction reputation

By being a merc for factions via signing one week contracts and playing matches. But you don't earn rep with the faction you earn merc rep which is listed at the bottom of the reputation section.
And I believe you must be in a unit to be a merc (you can make your own) unless they changed that when they combined solo and unit queue. Freelancers don't earn rep for anything.

One man units are definitely still possible. So if you are not part of a unit and dont want to join an existing Merc unit that plays FW, then create your own with only yourself and then do a 7 day contract for whichever house you want to Merc for.

Just so you know, the mercenary ranks come quite a bit slower than the loyalist ones. There's only half as many mercenary ranks as there are loyalist ranks and they're equal to the even numbered loyalist ranks in point cost, meaning you spend a lot more time grinding for any given rank.
Also the only rank rewards are a given amount of Cbills so if you want free mechs or mechbays you'll need to play loyalist.

How to get faction reputation ... :
1- join a faction as a loyalist.
2- play matches and get faction reputation points.

How to get Merc reputation ...:
1- create a unit or join a unit.
2- take a contract with a faction.
3- play matches and get merc reputation points.

Mind you you can be in a unit or create a unit and be a loyalist as well, but you can not be a merc and loyalist.

You get cbills, mechbays, MC, and a dog tag item via merc. The mech bays come at the same amount of points as factions, the MC is at different points, and theres no gxp or other items.

So, to actually make the most of the faction system we have to join and ditch units over and over or try to pug through it as a solo unit. I can't imagine why that isn't more popular.

If you mean to game FP to get free mechbays, sure.

If you want to have fun you join a unit with players you get a long with that play FP and have fun together (or go to the FRR TS hub, lots of great guys there)
