I never played the XCOM series, so I cannot comment on that. But after the Mechwarrior and Mechcommander series, Multiplayer BattleTech, and now MechWarrior Online, having a new BT/MW game be turn-based just looks too archaic for me.

But that's me.

Fair enough I suppose, and I would like a new MechCommander as well as this turn based Battletech game. That being said turn based games are still pretty popular the XCOM series being one of them(and one I would recommend) as well as Civilisation VI coming out in October. If Battletech doesn't do it for you that is a bummer, but turn based games really are not archaic even by today's standards.

I was just spoiled by the Total War series of games: turn-based strategy, real-time combat. Posted Image

I will admit, to some degree, I did like the Double Blind combat of Mechwarrior Tactics. (all moves plotted, then combat sequence unfolds after... with no knowledge of the enemy units moves first) It made a lot of moves really backfire.

That said, it was a little unrealistic since one can react to an opponents moves. But it made for more immersive cinematics, no doubt. (well, or would of if MWT hadn't had such balls lousy designs for literally EVERYTHING)

LoL sorry but nothing was good about that game, it was an enflamed scrotum of a game, I thought long and hard about backing HBS after MWT had me saying Never ever will I backer fund another game, then of course HBS said the magic word

3025, and the thought of a flag to hang on my wall, which leads to this.

You're right, that is the year we are in. Posted Image

XCOM 2 also came out in 2016 and it is turn based. I'd say the genre is just as relevant now as it was before.

The genre isn't obsolete just because you don't like it.

Turn-based was never obsoleted by real-time, it's just a completely different gaming experience. I want to sit in peace with my espresso and think through what I'm going to do.

I'm a huge fan of the tactical, unit-level, turn-based strategy ever since Laser Squad on the Amiga (that's the game the first XCOM was based on -- blew my mind at the time).

Hated RTS since day one (what was it, Command and Conquer?), still do.

The modded Mechcommander 2 is at http://www.moddb.com...er-omnitech-559 It's an EXE file, so it should be easy to install.

Then download any extra campaigns you want http://www.moddb.com...er=t&category=2 which are also EXE files.

The old, complicated and time consuming way of installing it ended a few years ago. (There used to be some other program that you had to install which required a third program to run.. it's all in EXE files, now.)

Is this game working under win 10? because under win 7 an update last winter patched me out of playing, and no mater what i did i could not get it to work anymore.. I just did a fresh win 10 install, perhaps i'll try it again..

Is there anything special that i can add to make it more reliable on modern systems? (though i should just get my legacy win 2k system up and running, i have the new HD for it.. The only thing i need to do is fine old drivers for my MB and vid card.. I think it is an old Geforce card if i recall correctly..

It's 2016 for crying out loud! They really should have taken a page from Creative Assembly.

To be fair, there are tons of people that prefer turn based games..typically i prefer the realtime with pause, but TB do have some charm, especially for people that get interupted a lot while they play, of think of games more like a chess match, verse a click fest..

I love turn based Battletech, ever since this was the most graphically advanced way to play:

If the new game was real-time I'd probably still have backed it, but I'd be nowhere near as excited about it.

Variety is necessary for me. Guild Wars 2, Mechwarrior Online, No Man's Sky, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Necropolis, eventually Overlord and Battletech gives me a wide range of games to play. From exploration, to simulation, to raw FPS.

If I don't have access to variety, I get bored. Fast. If I can split my attention among several things, not only do I pay more attention to any one thing, but I enjoy it more.

totally agree.. But honestly much of my varriety comes from really old games.. Baldurs gate, Tropico 1, Freedom force, Starcraft, and some slightly newer aging games like Gal Civ II, Mass effect, Dragon age, Civ, Crusader kinds, witcher 1, (love me some isometric RPG's! or newer games that follow the old school feels.. :) Banished and heroines quest, are wonderful games that feels old, but is newer.

It was a free public domain game on the Commodore Amiga called Mechforce. It used different names for everything to avoid copyright problems, but it was Battletech to the core.

Interestingly, it used the same sort of time based turn that the new game will be using. It worked extremely well to highlight the advantages of fast lighter mechs and encourage using more than just assault mechs, so I'm very confident it'll be successful in Battletech too.

It appears someone tried to get it working again: https://sourceforge....ects/mechfight/

Fortunately with the HBS game it won't matter that the arm is lower, since it isn't trying to get over really bad hitboxes in terrain lol.

Some folks are tweeting their responses to playing it at Gen Con and it seems to be going over well even in this pre-pre-alpha format. The Screens even have a big stuck on sign reminding you of how pre alpha it is lol.

HyperRPG is also there in the same booth playing with their huge game of tabletop Battletech with the 3D printed mechs, so I hope this type of marketing draws a lot of folks in who might not have even heard of Battletech.

So its supposed to be launching with All of that? Fore sure?

I was under the impression that they would only be able to do Some of that.

That list has more than I remember them saying that they wanted to reach.

I have already funded, and was happy thinking all we would get was some sort of PvE. But if all of that comes with it at Launch, then Im extra happy

My comments:
  • RNGesus hates Atlai (and their pilots).
  • Nice display of using lighter 'Mechs and Jump Jets to tactically win a combat!
  • MWO's PPC animation is better and HBS needs to just use it....
  • Make firing AC sound more like boom boom boom and less brrrrrt. I admit that it depends on the number of projectiles being launched (amount of projectiles in a cassette) but it just didn't sound cool.

Personally, I liked the PPC animation and the BRRRRRT.

I am pretty excited about this, I would probably prefer that over MWO currently and I'm not even a big strategy game fan. It does make me miss having a single player mode just to tease me with the universe.

I'm OK with the BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRT on like AC2s and 5s I wan't something more like a Bofors or bigger for the AC10 and 20.

but deeper.
