It's a fair question for folks that don't have time in the cockpit of a Stalker. I love my Stalkers (aside from a couple Cyclops they're the only Assaults I pilot). I also am heavy in lights and agree Stalkers are also easy prey for Lights.
That said, there are tricks to running the Stalker generally. Lots of folks load them up as LRM boats and sit back with them. Generally that is a recipe for Doom given the low mobility and lack of arm movement (okay, the -3F gets better twist quirks but still not great). Stalkers really want and need to be in with the group, either up getting their own locks if you must put LRMs on them, or brawling the f%$^ out of people. These beasts can both dish out buckets of damage with a mix of SRM and Energy but also are absolute Kings of rolling and spreading damage.... as long as you are not caught out in the open alone with a hungry light behind you. Can't count how many times even I've been in a Stalker and finally go down saying "holy mother, can't believe how much damage I withstood...."
TLDR; Stalkers are beastly damage givers and tankers, but are highly dependent on team support and positioning.
