Your Assaults were not retreating, they were advancing to the opposite direction!

TBF, retreating from disadvantageous position, setting up firing line and then lighting up the enemy as they come in is a sensible tactic.

Those situations are a cluster f*ck. In an ideal situation the guys in front will back up and let the guys in back share some of the damage while rotating fire and retreating. This just never happens and everything tends to turn into a free for all with everyone blaming each other at the end. Whether backing up is appropriate or not, I've always felt it was the responsibility of the person coming up the rear *giggles* to move in response because our big, futuristic, 50 ton mechs don't have rear view mirrors. It's just a courtesy, you know? Then again, if you're movements are erratic and selfish then don't cry when other people can't predict when you decide to back up into them. Even in a light mech, I often find myself irritated at a heavy pilot who tries to run around like a locust, blocking line of fire, and causing a lot of frustration.

If PGI hadn't have zoomed the god damn minimap all the way out.. and removed friendly directional dorito arrows.. maybe those assaults would be able to perceive spacial relationships between them and the rest of the team.

With this godawful crap-map, you gather zero information about unit placement and where open spaces between people are when they are near each other.

Imagine how us 100T pilots feel when everyone and their dog does this to us, and expects us to maneuver out of their way? The difference is that if we accidentally block a lights firing line, the light may take a few points of team damage penalty, and can easily re position. When a light blocks our firing line, we potentially suck a TK and have to stop firing arguably significantly more fire power while we spend the next 10 - 15 seconds trying to re position.

You are right, its a *********** when the Assaults dont engage. It was pretty sad watching a King Crab run away from the battle.

I think its partly due to the lack player quality. They play assaults for damage instead of realizing if you are in a 100t, your teammates need the armor, not your damage. If you are playing for damage, get in a heavy and people wont expect you to be a meatshield during a push. I love being the meatshield in my Jager......

Engaging in a slow, cumbersome Assault is a difficult thing. In an ideal world I would like to know where I need to go since repositioning is often not an option. One false move and I am dead as I can't simply run out of a sticky situation. That means I'd like to have some intel about where the enemy is and where I need to go. I would like a free path to get there with my limited speed. And I would like a free field of fire.
Unfortunately reality sucks. So I get no intel, no one follows me into the fire when I push. Fast Mechs run in front of me and stop there, making it impossibel to bring my heavy guns down on the OPFOR and making me stop, thus slowing down the push.
A push is a team effort. It can be a thing of beauty to be in an assault and be aggressive with lighter units preparing the way and protecting my fat *** from little squirrels while I can target and eliminate the big guns of the OPFOR and while I take their fire.

Assaults are no more meat shields than the other classes. They need their armor to compensate for their lack of mobility. That is not an excuse for cowardice in battle though :-). Hiding Mechs are always bad, assault or other classes alike.

Assaults are meat shields, especially if you arent playing in a Meta mech. Now if you are in a meta mech, its a whole different situation. Which is a huge issue with this game. Power creep and this whole hide and go poke game play is ruining how certain mechs function. "I NEED MY ASSAULTS!!"

Example:
Jager mechs arent meta mechs and they depend immensely on their Assaults to draw fire. If I was in a TBR, BK, etc etc, I wouldnt have given two ***** about the assaults on my team.

This is what good pilots of all varieties, but especially pilots in slower mechs, do on a regular basis. They start in a forward position, and after engaging the enemy, they constantly re-assess their positioning relative to the battle. When positioning becomes too unfavorable, they attempt to change their positioning. When you block them from doing that, you are hurting the team. Stop standing directly behind bigger, slower mechs. They don't like being blocked just as much as they don't like friendly fire going into their rear.

Assaults can't effectively retreat from a bad situation, so it benefits the team to have the heavies and mediums on the front line to establish the enemy's positioning and form the initial firing line. When it becomes clear that they can engage without getting vaporized then assaults move up to lay down the hate and draw fire. Once superiority is established then it is time for everyone to push with the assaults. Trying to hide behind them or getting too far ahead of them is bad, moving with them to focus fire and watch their six/flanks is good. Rotating the vanguard to share armor and draw fire wins matches.

This. I love people making excuses on why the biggest baddest mechs on the field are running away when the other team is pushing..

Because you only get one life per game and pushing at the wrong time, at the wrong spot, or without the support of your team is suicide.

To expand on that: I never want to go even 1v1 vs an enemy assault head on. Unless he is a potato I am going to be beat up and an easy target for the next enemy that runs across me. I will fight an enemy 1v1 if it makes tactical sense to do so but it usually does not.

I want to fight 3:1 with friendly mechs focusing fire to take down that enemy before he can do much damage to me. I want him to be more concerned with trying to flee from unfavorable odds than fighting back. Pushing headlong into 12 enemies is stupid, you want to push from a flank where you can quickly overwhelm 2-3 mechs. Once you are ahead by that much the game is basically won 99% of the time.

The other team is already pushing...you are already in a bad position. So why retreat? Have you read anything that I have posted? The assaults had support but they decided to cut tail and run away...

If you are in a bad position and the enemy is pushing then retreating is the only sane thing to do. Doubling down on your bad position by pushing back is just going to result in you dying alone because most players are smart enough to know that pushing from a bad spot is not going to work and they won't follow you.
