Assaults can't effectively retreat from a bad situation, so it benefits the team to have the heavies and mediums on the front line to establish the enemy's positioning and form the initial firing line. When it becomes clear that they can engage without getting valorized then assaults move up to lay down the hate and draw fire. Once superiority is established then it is time for everyone to push with the assaults. Trying to hide behind them or getting too far ahead of them is bad, moving with them to focus fire and watch their six/flanks is good. Rotating the vanguard to share armor and draw fire wins matches.

THIS. TEAM GAME.

This. I love people making excuses on why the biggest baddest mechs on the field are running away when the other team is pushing..

So if they cant retreat, then why not push forward to meet the opponents assaults?

Simple. Instant Death ™ and rightfully so due to stupid behaviour on the battlefield.
The opponents AssaultS will puverize my single Assault in mere seconds. If it is still standing after the other lighter opponents had their shots on my single, slow moving target that is. Armor is just a cosmetic concept in this kind of situation.

Multiple assaults were running away... It wasnt 1v3....So yet again its players in assaults not playing them like they are assaults.

If you are in a bad position and the enemy is pushing then retreating is the only sane thing to do. Doubling down on your bad position by pushing back is just going to result in you dying alone because most players are smart enough to know that pushing from a bad spot is not going to work and they won't follow you.

How are you going to die alone when the whole team is pushing with the assaults?? What is the point of retreating just to die 1v8 rather than dieing 5v8..

Stop assuming the team wasnt support the assaults. That is the issue. If you are actively engaged and your assaults start to hide, they arent playing the class correctly.

Imagine how us 100T pilots feel when everyone and their dog does this to us, and expects us to maneuver out of their way? The difference is that if we accidentally block a lights firing line, the light may take a few points of team damage penalty, and can easily re position. When a light blocks our firing line, we potentially suck a TK and have to stop firing arguably significantly more fire power while we spend the next 10 - 15 seconds trying to re position.

yeah because lights are so huge and the block your entire shot...

Light mechs are only easily targeted and shot when they are blue obviously. ;)

I didn't say they were unsupported, I said if they were in a bad position (which you said they were) then pushing into the enemy would be the wrong tactical decision qnd the team would be right to not push with them through a bad spot. Just because you are getting pushed does not mean you have to counter push, especially if you are on unfavorable ground. In that situation the correct tactical choice is to make a fighting withdrawal and try to regroup around a more defensible spot to stop the enemy push. Once their charge is broken then you can counter push from a position of strength.

Saying assaults should never try to disengage is just silly, that is the kind of thinking that results in all these "MM is rigged and keeps teaming me with idiots" threads.

Parking right in front of you with their back turned may just contribute to the chance of hitting said light.

And as for that Muppet who thinks an assault can shoot over top of them, no wonder he died twice.

Bullfighting

You see a bull charging you its stupid to charge at it, you step out of its way.

This is what those assaults were doing, you said no one was infront of them sharing damage and the enemy was pushing, so they should side step the enemy push so that the enemies push directly into the middle of your whole team to get shot up rather than a few assaults running up the ramp and dying to 12 guns at once.

Also you have no idea how assaults work, they aren't made for tanking or all that stuff, meta or not. They are for putting down loads of firepower, look at the Daishi for example, even the Atlas, king of tanking and brawling, has super high DPS. Assaults kill other mechs quickly and in a 1 on 1 fight have a pretty good chance of winning but when the fights go to 1v2 their chance of winning goes to nil against same skilled opponents.

Why would you want your biggest piece of firepower just absorbing damage anyway? Infact why would you want anyone on your team taking damage? You don't win matches by taking damage, you win them by making the enemy take more damage than you did and by negating effective damage by spreading it and dodging it. Those assaults are playing right to be shooting then backing away, infact some like the Banshee, Battlemaster, and KDK-3 are perfectly designed for high damage poking.

If your team has to be taking damage for whatever reason, send the lightest mechs out first, that way if you lose them your team loses considerably less firepower, light mechs also are harder to hit so they have a good distraction factor. By having the assaults move in last they have a lower chance of being focused and if they are focused then it will be after everyone has shared damage already, making enemies choose to either finish off mildly damaged heavies, mediums, and lights, or start on a group of fresh assaults. This also keeps assaults from getting opened up and losing firepower early on. Like if a Dire Wolf loses a side torso that can be worse than your team losing a full medium mech.

Maybe PGI should change the "Assault" to "Really Heavy" or something. People might be less inclined to think that they're meant to be advancing and assaulting at all times regardless of the situation.

There should really be a terrible fish pun in there.

I think you need a Grasshopper on the left and a Comando on the right doing something like this.

While I mostly agree, there are far to many people that think assault means Support from the back, far far at the back then cry when they get butt ***** by a light

Agreed. As a King Crab only pilot I always try to be right in the middle of the team, even when playing LRMs. Those are best delivered like a pizza, hot and fast and not from too far away :)
