No. Losing a torso doesn't cause an explosion.

In most cases ammo explosion happens from a lucky shot of Gauss/AC10/AC20/PPC. With 62% crit chance/slot and 10% of explosion you have a 6.2% chance to lose a component in one blow if it has only ammo inside. Any weapon/heatsink will lower this chance.

All other weapons spread their damage over the crit slots, and in case of ammo those are 10Hp each.

So when I put 4 tons of ammo under an AC5 I double the durability of latter in exchange of having 3.1% (it goes lower as I consume ammo) chance to die from crit if I get a shot from high damage weapons. Pretty acceptable exchange IMO.

Does the remaining ammo explode if you destroy the torso but doesn't damage the ammo? And yes, ammo explosion happens way too infrequently in MWO. The only deterrent for ACs in MWO is the weight so you end up with Dakkas. How could you fail in so many areas PGI. Posted Image

I'm really doubting ACs need any more deterrent. Lasers already tend to do a lot of things pretty good for low weight and low risk and infinite ammo. ACs are in a decent place, maybe could use some more ammo per ton, match it with the AC10 across the board.

I keep mine in the safe with the guns except for the two extra magazines I keep in my console for my CCW... Oh, you meant on mechs. Wherever you can make it fit. Most people don't shoot legs so it isnpretty safe there and in the head. I will put it in the CT if I have to.

Well one thing to consider with "dakka" builds, is damage per ton of ammo. 2s and 5s its 150 per ton, and 20s its 140 per ton. 10 class is the sweet spot that mirrors SRMS at 200 damage per ton. So... six tons of LB-10X with a pair of the guns, 1200 damage for 28 tons total mass...vs quad AC-2s with 4 tons of ammo. Same 28 tons total, but now you only have 600 damage you can deal.

And 2 ac5 with 12 tons of ammo 1800 damage for 28 total tonnage ...
8 MG with 24 tons of ammo >>>> 48000 damage broooooo

Well what the point with comparing differents weapons with same total weapon + ammo tonnage when recycle time, spread, range and velocity and cumulated sustained DPS are totally different....

Instead take LBX10 as example why you didnt take AC10 example ? 28 tonns mean only 800 damage also your example become less spectacular 800-600 ( less spectacular but still irrevelant ).

I just want to be able to CASE my arms... It's the only slots left in some builds but they're also used as shields... Why am I forced to let that ammo blow off my torso??

My order is generally:

1. Head
2. Legs, unless it's a fast mover (enemies get leg-happy) in which case go to 3
3. Arms, especially if I can crit-pad* them OK. If the arms big (catch a lot of fire) and I cannot crit-pad them, go to 4
4. Torso sections, with maximal possible crit-padding

(*crit padding = stuffing the section with ammo with as many as possible non-explosible pieces of equipment, to reduce the chance of a critical hit causing an ammo explosion)

you can also place ammo by order of usage. i believe the order is head, torsos, arms, legs (theres an infographic floating around but i dont know if its accurate, im just recalling from memory). this makes the legs the place for reserve ammo, as well as the place that is going to be the sweet spot for crits. torsos arent so bad. by the time you run out of armor you should have finished off any ammo in the torsos.

id love to be able to prioritize ammo consumption. like use the ammo farthest from the weapon first and work my way in. or give priority to dangerously packed ammo, like the 2 tons in my uncased torsos.

See Appogee's post above. Head is actually last to get used now.

In the cockpit that way if ammo is cooking, death will be quick.

I seriously dont remember last time i got or saw an ammo cookoff. It used to be common though.
