Hello,

I'm a fairly new player at Mechwarrior and just getting used to the system and how the game works. However, over the last few days I've suddenly found myself nearly unable to play. Whenever I start a match, when I enter the match, I immediately, always, server disconnect. However, when I re-enter the match, the game seems to be working fine, aside from me having missed a good deal of it!

I thought it was maybe an internet issue, but my internet seems to be working fine, and there is never a problem opening the game and going around the mechlab - its only when I start matches that this issue occours. I haven't played with the settings much, but as a newbie, I'm wondering what the proper steps here are?

Thanks for your time!

Check your ISP. Some providers will limit large-bandwidth interchanges or throttle suddenly high usage. It sounds to me like your ISP doesn't like gaming. You might try checking the small-print in your contract or contacting your ISP directly to figure out if it's something on their end.

Do you have a wired or wireless connection? If you have a wireless connection you could try changing the Wi-Fi channel. A lot of routers default to channel 6, so if you have a lot of different routers in your area you'll have a lot of different signals on the same channel. By changing to a non-default channel like 9 or 4 you might get a cleaner, more stable connection.

If playing wirelessly and it is plausable to plug in a network cable I would advise doing so, a hardwired connection is more reliable and faster than wireless

I get disconnects every now and them. Sometimes when joining a fight I get kicked back to mecbbay just as the battle would loud up, sometimes back to login screen. Also sometimes from fight to login screen.

It's odd in that I don't get that from other online games I play, but for me it's not frequent to be a problem. I have mobile 4G connection with about 80 ping to European server and 160 to US. For example pinging Google www server will get me about 70-90 ms with 80 ms average. The connection is fairly stable, I've really never seen actual disconnects from the net.

I would guess these are because the game has tighter timeout values combined with the general slowness of the game on weaker computers. I've seen some people have spesific problems using one or two of the three possible servers.

I doubt there is much you can do about this besides upgrading your connection and computer. If you have a relatively fast computer with wired connection then maybe there is something else. Wired connection +wlan router should be pretty fine I think.

Firstly, thanks everyone for the help! However, the problem has gotten worse - I can't even get into mechwarrior now - it simply says "Unknown Error" whenever I try to log in! I hadn't even tried to implement any of the suggested fixes yet.

I'm dubious that its a problem with my ISP or internet connect - the internet works great for everything else, and MWO worked great for the first two weeks I had this modem and computer set up. My roommate in the same house says he gets no issues with gaming. I'll heave to keep checking things.

Is your room mate able to run MWO, and have you tried logging in with his computer?

Troubleshooting requires testing and ruling out things.

Also, the internet is not just the internet. Just because you are not having any issue downloading and watching...mech porn.. does not mean there are not any issues. It is like the US Highway system, stretches of highway where there are no issues then suddenly major construction, 10-car pile up, visibility cut to 10 feet, tornado/hurricane/blizzard/hail storm w/golf ball to baseball size hail...etc... never mind what could happen to the vehicle itself.. overheating, gas gauge stuck and now ya out of gas, tire blow out but the spare is flat or no spare at all, your partner pulls a weapon on you and makes you get out....

The thing is, I have had zero issues for 6 months or so. And those issues were completely on my end. Firewall issue, perhaps?

Hey,

Just giving an update.

I tried turning off my firewall on the computer. This appeared to fix the "unknown error" I was getting at the start, letting me get into the game...... but the server drop and lag issue remained the same.

EDIT: I'm wondering if on this new computer the router isn't up to snuff. What sort of routers do most people here use? I just got one with my computer. Has anyone had trouble with routers before?

I don't remember if this has been asked before, but are you running on wifi? If so, if it's possible to hard wire try that and see if it helps. As far as what router, I recently bought a top of the line Asus AC router, but that's because we have 4 people in our house and the kids often have friends over who want to play on wifi. I will typically be playing MWO while everyone else is on wifi, playing games and watching videos.

Have you ever run a speed test on your internet?

Also, maybe post your system specs, just in case there is something else that may be causing the problem.

In the UK the ISP usualy provides the router, my BT Home Hub is absolutely fine if I am hardwired, but I suffer bad lag and unstable connections if playing over WiFi despite the fact the router is only 2 meters away and has direct line of sight to the anienna on my desktop, so I always play hardwired, the wireless is just there in case the cable gets damaged and I misplace my cable making tools and/or about 50m of spare cat5e cable
