Yeah, look at the better IS heavies-- Warhammer, Black Knight, QuickDraw, etc.-- all use XLs in their best loadouts. The Battlemaster is one of the top assaults and almost everyone runs big XLs.
Firepower, mobility, protection. A STD gives you a marginal increase in protection while severely limiting mobility or firepower, sometimes both.

I only really use XL engines when I really need the weight or speed. They're too expensive to buy just because I feel like it.

There's nothing 'new' about using big XLs. Those are your typical glass cannon builds. It's debatable whether it's even worth the risk in an IS assault mech. Twisting is suppose to protect your vulnerable CT but if you are just presenting your less armored ST, then it's just as likely a smart opponent will core you anyway through fire discipline.
An XL KGC is usually a TERRIBLE idea unless you are faced with a low tier opponent. The reason why OP survived so long is because his opponents were trying to leg him after stripping away all his ST/CT armor for some reason.
A KC is just gonna get focussed in the CT anyway, why not XL and twist to spread the laser over the whole 3 torso, and pack more dakka to boot, AND go faster. I say XL the KC all the way, its a glass cannon, play it as such.
there are just a handful of mechs that should be STD,
Most Atlai,
All stalkers
All Thuds
Some Cataphracts
Some Orions
Some Banshees
The Marauder Bounty Hunter
Honestly cant think of anything else, if your not running a big XL you are shooting yourself in the foot.
