I liked Patrick Kell. The Kell hound mercenary name was always really cool to me. Phelan Kell/Wolf/Ward was meh, he was lucky EDIT! Ulric Kerensky, Natasha Kerensky and Celia Ward took a liking to him.

I loved how Wolf's dragoons was revealed to be from clan Wolf the whole time. There are great stories in the books if you get the chance to read them. After Wizkids took over, things seemed to get a little "silly".

As for who the villains are, Smoke Jaguar, other than that it is highly subjective, there are very few outright "evil" charactors in battletech lore, depending on the viewpoint Steiner, Davion, Liao Marek. Kurita, Jade Falcon, Wolf, the Clans in general, the IS in general have all played the bad guys

Most of the "Villians" are not Mech pilots...

The true villians in Battletech are politicians and ideologies.

This scene from Metal Gear Peacewalker manages to sum it up well enough from the mercenary's point of view.
