I haven't played in well over a year due to other games and the state of this one at the time.

Me and a few friends were thinking about trying he game again and I was wondering what is new?
I left a month or so after the batch of new mechs like the Locust etc. but before any clan mechs?

The pub stomping was horrific, the forums were very toxic, PGI did not give a crap and their wasn't many maps.

Is the game better or is it still not worth the bandwith to download?

The game is "bigger", it has more mechs, more maps, more game modes (that basically all boil down to team deathmatch without respawn), you can now plaster your mechs with funny stickers and there are random loot boxes you can open if you buy keys for MC.

Stomps still happen, but quick play is solo only.

Pugstomping is no longer an issue in quickplay as groups and solos are now separate queues, that doesn't mean there are no stomps or unbalanced matches, but you no longer see premade groups against solos pugs.

Faction warfare has pugstomping though, and lots of it.

Otherwise the game is larger with more mechs and maps, and a new mechlab that actually ok, but a lot of the new content is badly implemented. Faction warfare is currently a complete mess due to a number of disastrously incompetent changes, the so called "phase 3" was very badly received and for good reasons.

If you're coming back for quickplay then yes quickplay is better than it was back then despite all the problems.

Forums are still a saltmine.

PGI wants new players, but they don't want new players with a couple of friends so you have two choices;

1. Drop in solo queue and hope your friends can "sync drop" into the same match as you.

2. Group up and be put in group queue where you can be eaten alive by larger groups (at least initially).

Oh,...and Community Warfare now has a much catchier name, "Faction Warfare", but essentially is the same. Except for the fact that they added a kink to it. You see they have this Long Tom Artillery that one side will control and every few minutes it drops an absolutely DEVASTATING explosion on any significant concentration of mechs and blows them all to hell and gone.

I believe that this was introduced in order to speed up the seal clubbing that normally occurs in this mode, saving the 12 man organized groups some time. So yeah, basically CW/FW is a graveyard at this point, don't bother.

On the brighter side, it's a long weekend!

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

If you keep that in mind, then you won't really have any surprises.

Map voting, minimap change, mechwarrior academy (free C-Bills), reward change, new mechs, Ghost Heat, Domination mode (which sucks), decals, old map revamps...

There are units and players still active in FW. So if he want's to give it a go, then be sure to ask around and play with the bigger kids.

Thanks for the info I decided to download the game again to give it a try. I have 4 or 5 friends that are interested in playing as well but had a very bad alpha/beta experience but I will let them know how it is currently.

So far a few good things are new but game play feels the same.
