Ever tried Battlefield? Its not that fastpaced, you can also play as a support and dont have to go for kills to contribute, there are different maps and modes and lots of vehicles. Otherwise there is no real alternativ mechwarrior game, sadly.
Quite a few of us are on GameRanger rocking it out on MW4 Mercenaries, which has been updated with HD graphics, and can be downloaded for free these days...

Man, I came here from playing BF3/BF4, and if you're comparing it to MWO it's WAY more fast paced.
Playing a shooter with respawns kind of alleviates this, some, but after having MWO be my main game for a while now I'm thoroughly unused to the pace of Battlefield now.
I really like the level of mech building available in this game, and I'm not sure if I know of any other games that have something comparable.

As a CoD player who played BF3 for a time, you'll get murdered by the people who can do both tactics and twitch play.

Armored Core, but that's even faster.

Hmmm ... that BT turn-based PC game looks nice, but it's really not the same thing as this FPS game ... turn-based vs real-time are a whole Galaxy away from each other.
If you have Steam, there might be a lot of FPS/cheap/free games that you could search for.
MAV is being made by one guy. I have played the alpha version from a few months ago and, while rough, it is going places with regular updates. Currently the game already has 6 legged, 4 wheeled, 2 legged, and hover mech types (plus more I probably forgot about). You can build and customize mechs based on your movement and cockpit type which determines your total available tonnage and base energy reserve. All weapons are aimed using a first person camera system from the weapons POV and you can switch to a third person camera (has a crosshair but way less precise) for general movement/navigation. There is a demo version available on the website, but I don't know when it was last updated.
Less Twitch, eh? Well, Titanfall with the smart pistol is pretty straightforward. Just lock 'n fire/forget. While faster paced, the smart pistol takes twitch aiming out of the equation, altogether. You can do well enough to have fun, I think. If people are still populating the severs, that is... Anyway, it was/is one of my top ten games of all time. Titanfall 2 will have a single player campaign. So, no need to worry about going head to head v "youngsters"...
I'd highly recommend looking into HBS B^ATTLETECH. I think this is ideal to your situation, as someone above mentioned.
Mount & Blade Bannerlord is the closest thing coming out later this year. Cyberpunk 2077 and Mass Effect Andromeda next year or so. But nothing online or even single player with online aspect.
World of Warships is a last gen complete waste of time but its ok for that.
M&B Bannerlord has gameplay quite similar to MechWarrior Online for mounted combat and may even be good practice one for the other. The horse travels exactly like a mech in one direction and the player/rider has to turn and aim independent.
The faction system is similar to. This is the old M&B below but its still amazing gameplay. M&B is the best example of an older game being as good or better than any other newer game even with bad graphics.
Also best example that MechWarrior online with its current graphics can have at least another 10 years staying power. The bottom video is from 2016. The real game if you go down the player has to spectate the rest of the battle.
Its a lot more difficult than MechWarrior in 1st person though. Also if mounted use a lance. Swords are for the stupid knight on horseback. Movement/charging bonuses and using a lance on horseback will break a shield or put another knight down or his horse.
Big stompy robots with no lore but upgrades and cockpit decorations. Real time damage repair. Weapons that are, mostly, machine gun like but some missiles and mines.
I'd say it's a couple of steps up on the twitch chart and about 20 points lower on the 'interesting' scale.
Hopefully, Heavy Gear Assault comes out much better than MWO.
FYI, MWO is my break from the Total War games.
Have you played the WH40k Total War? If so, how is it?
I'm a big fan of the Total War games myself, but haven't had the opportunity to try it yet.

It's WAY more twitchy than MWO. It's basically a random FPS game with mech skins.
Games like WoWarships are much more like MWO, particularly for someone with less twitch interest/skills.
