Can anything actually be done about people who mod their install of MWO to cheat? While it's easy to lose a match and say, "Those guys were cheating", I actually observed someone in my drop cheating, after I was killed. Someone I don't know.

I did the 'click to observe' after I was killed, and was observing someone with two LRM20 and two medium lasers. But every time he fired, he never used the lasers. The really odd thing that I saw was that he could launch four LRM20s in a row, bam bam bam bam, and it was followed by about four or five LRM5s. There were no LRM5s on his mech, and he only had TWO LRM20s. Clearly, something isn't right, here.

I would have reported the player, but had no proof. I don't have a setup for recording matches.

The hackers/cheaters are really ruining the game, regardless of whether on the opposing team or the same team. What can be done about this?

FRAPS is a free recording program, although the quality can be quite bad at times. Name and shame my friend, name and shame! Just be sure you have proof!

The game can bug and show the wrong weapons on a mech in spectator mode. That, and what mech was he piloting? Some mechs only have smaller tube counts, no matter what size launcher you stick on, and thus fire in bursts. I'm voting for a spectator glitch though.

What can be done about this is reporting it to support if you think someone is cheating and watching this thread get locked by a mod.

I think you aren't familiar with all MWO mechanics yet. there's something called tube count, every missile hardpoint has that. While almost all clan mechs have 20 tubes per hardpoint, Inner Sphere mechs don't. So if you have a hardpoint with 5 tubes, you can only shoot 5 missiles at a time, resulting in 4 volleys (of 5 missiles) when you fire a single LRM20.

And that he didn't fire his lasers... well you *can* adjust your weapon groups so you don't have to fire all at once (what we call alpha strike).

By the way, everything in MWO is server authoritative which means you can mod your client all you want, when the server says your weapon is on cooldown you can't fire again.

So while there are cheats out there, I doubt you have encountered one.

No one who cheats would ever use LRMs. Like 627 said, it's the tube count being lower than 20, meaning that a 20 shot takes two volleys (or more). He didn't use the MLs because he was either at the wrong range or was riding his thermal limit with the lurms and didn't want to shutdown.

From the sounds of it, he probably saw an Archer or a Catapult firing its LRM20s, with the bay doors closed.

Probably given that it is not even covered in the tutorials (last time I checked). Also interesting because bay doors are seemingly random on which mechs get them*, which do not, and which mechs that had get stripped of them (looks at Centurion in mechbay and weeps).

This way you can avoid overheating which is basically one of the few key skills you realy need.

Your post sound a little like you have never completed the tutorial?

Don't recall any catapult not having 20 tubes, same with archer.

Maybe an Orion-V?
15 tubes and 2 energy hp.

Catapult and Archer have 20 tubes, and when you fire them without opening the bay doors first, they chain-fire. About 15 missiles go first, and then followed by 5. That's probably what OP saw.

@ OP this is not a cheat this is launcher-size issues. Some mechs can only fire a specific number of missiles at a time. Lets say you put a LRM 20 in a missile spot that can only fire 5 at a time. The result would be 4 groups of 5 missiles shooting out from that spot. Likewise if you have a spot that could only fire 10, then you would end up with 2 groups of 10 firing from a LRM20 put in that spot.

King Crab has to open its pincers to fire. Think that's canon but I could be wrong.
