I think the new system is moronic. a 25 ton locust has as much "energy" as a 100 ton dire wolf. Why would I want to drive the whale anymore if I have the same alpha limit as a locust? I'd be using all my extra tonnage for heat sinks to offset the penalty. They should at least make energy scale with the engine or the tonnage to make this make sense. Even if ED stuck to the original goal of nerfing alpha size, it makes no sense than an atlas should have the same penalty free alpha as a jenner.

Because a Locust can't equip 6 UAC/5 or 2 ERPPC + 2 Gauss. I'm pretty those are much deadlier than a Locust with 5-6 Medium Lasers.

Also, it's 20 tons, not 25.

One of the biggest reasons I hate ED so much, aside from the straight up broken mechanics, is that everything it is designed to do is better done by fixing the very core problem it's trying to band-aid.

Yes. Hence my comment above.

Assuming that a 75 ton mech would be able to reach the DPS cap, what possible purpose is there for a mech capable of carrying a greater weapons load than said 75 ton mech? Dire Wolf being the obvious example. If you try to claim that the extra armour and structure somehow make up for its turret like movement skills, you are going to be laughed at...

Yes it's deadlier but then I should just play a lighter mech then because I can't fire half those guns anyways at the same time and poking with a dire wolf's mobility is a laughable idea. This really ruins the point of driving really heavy mechs with crap mobility. Maybe the locust was a bad comparison but how bout a Timber or a Nova?

I run full dakka on my DWF because the thing can't retreat or twist for s*** anyways, but now ED is nerfing high dps KDK-3 type builds as well, so I really wonder how uncle russ expects 100 ton assault mechs to fit into this new balance scheme.

Even now you wouldn't really fire anything on top of Gauss because of heat penalties, so the only thing this does is give dual Gauss salvos more heat so they can remove some of the other penalties so that you can mount them on more mechs and give them potentially lower sustained DPS.

ED going live as is, you would fire the Gauss (or dual Gauss) wait for Energy Refill and then fire your energy - with no added heat into the mix from the Gauss.

If it had 7.5 heat, it certainly would, because the advantage of ignoring heat as a balancing mechanic is gone.

I lack the optimism you have for PGI.

I have no optimism for PGI. Seems like they found a way to simultaneously ruin everything in an attempt to fix something that should have been much smaller scale.

What is the point of the gauss anymore? One of the selling points was it had pretty much no heat but had charge up time. So high tonnage ballistics get effectively nerfed because they don't do what they originally were meant to do anymore (give high dph values at the expense of tonnage)

I know that, which I guess doesn't make much sense given that they added the charge back onto it, but prior to that rollback it would've made more sense. Honestly though I'm hoping that the Live test will create such a firestorm that ED never goes fully live and we just keep the cooldown and skill tree nerfs.

I don't think they will ever add heat to the Gauss because they think it should have that shtick, just like how they will never change the AC2 from doing 2 damage per pellet.

I find your lack of faith...disturbing.

I also find it to be depressingly realistic.
