Actually Clantech is better than IS tech, just look at the ER Large Laser for instance. For the same amount of heat the Clan laser has longer range, more damage, weighs less, and takes up less critical space. In general, this allows the Clans to field mechs that have more firepower, mobility, and protection for a given weight.

As I said, it makes doing the same job easier. The IS ER Large Laser still does the same job of providing an extended-range laser for use as a sniping weapon, as opposed to the standard Large Laser which can only be considered a long-range weapon if the tech level is universally set as 3025-era tech.

However, a person who uses a Clan ER LL against Clan opponents will be facing the same challenge as if they were using an IS ER LL against Inner Sphere opponents of the same tech level. The outcome of the battle will likely be the same, as the advantages in characteristics are offset by the same advantages being present in the opponent. In short, it doesn't matter if you are using Clan on Clan or IS on IS...the battles will be similar and the outcome largely based on pilot decision and tactics.

The only way this would not be true is if you were to match a Clan ER LL against an IS opponent. In this case, you are not looking for Clantech...you are looking for a way to overcome your opponent through superior technology instead of having to do the work yourself. It would be no different than a Star League Warhammer engaging a WHM-6R. The differences in tech determine the match unless the -6R pilot is considerably above the skill level of the SL WHM, in which case he/she could even up the fight enough to have at least a chance of victory.

So it really comes down to the motivation for calling for Clantech. Are the people crying for it the loudest really interested in the tech, or in getting advantages to cover for their own deficiencies?

If the clans are playeed as indicated in the canon, there will be several self limiting factors present. The clans have a dueling mentality that pits the smallest possible force against a foe. If the bidding system is in place, as it should be to determine who get to fight a given battle, the IS will have a numbers advantage. Given that advantage and the IS tactics of concentration of force, a canon clanner will find he needs the tech advantage. The game breaker will be the "clanner" who has no concept of who or what the clans represent. For this reason, I hope the clans are not an open faction but one that requires an invitation and entails performance restrictions. All those who keep saying they are "true clanners at heart" need to start showing it. The best way is to start using language the way the clans would use it. Strict grammar. No contractions. Precise vocabulary. If one cannot even get the language right, what are the chances of getting the heart correct?
