Hi guys,
I've been playing for about 9 months now and want to give faction play a go. Will probably end up going IS, and need advice on a decent drop deck. My preferred mechs from most to least are: heavies>assaults>mediums>lights (I have zilch experience in lights).
Also, any recommendations for casual units that are in need of new members:)

Thanks in advance!!!

Would suggest my unit but then the active members would amount to four of twenty six. Hardly fair for you.

Welcome to MWO, I don't believe I've had a chance to see or help you in the past.

For mechs, I recommend considering to have two faster mechs and two tankier/shootier mechs. In one case I had a Centurion, Cataphract, BattleMaster, and something else.

I personally enjoy IS versus IS battles mostly, gate rushing is a bit more difficult to pull off without opening the gates for IS heavies.

Faction warfare is hard and should have all your mechs your going to use skilled up,Also make sure your not afraid to use air or arty strikes and uav's as they are a huge part of the game.

When I play Faction Warfare (rarely nowadays) but I use the following
Thunderbolt
Warhammer
Marauder
Raven
I do pretty well with those as the warhammer I get my first 600 or so damage from then the marauder is more of a long range mech and deal another 500 more damage then the thunderbolt mops up anything else around doing about 400 more damage and then the raven has ecm to help out on the last part of the drop with Med pulse lasers and SRM's.

Average damage I get is about 1k to 2k but I have fun unless you get rolled by a Major Clan unit.

Jade falcon has all the Elite units so I would stay away from playing against them if you dont want to get rolled and your playing as a pug (alone) and stick to fighting against other IS houses or the other clans as you will have a better time playing the game and not quit from getting rolled everyone 30 minutes or so.

I hope this helps a bit and enjoy faction warfare my friend..

Also make sure you bring a good pot of coffee as well as they take a long time to do each game :)

you will notice there is a min tonnage and Max tonnage, for the drop deck. need to keep that in mind when you build your drop deck.
might want to know which mech you'll want to drop first and the order, but you can select which mech after first drop, if you have been destroyed on your first wave mech. Also you can select a different mech in the dropdeck before launch during the preparing to drop queue.
these are just minor things, but are need to know.

you don't actually need the 1 of each weight class, I started not too long ago, owned no Assaults, but did have 3 heavies.

Welcome to faction play, Posted Image

(only reason I'm seen in Quick play, right now, is the current leader board challenge, other then that, I don't Quick play any more since I started FP)

Okay, expecting Boreal vault, your probably gonna just want all the best brawlers you can bring. And honestly? Even in Boreal, if you team brawls it up, you can make it work. The mechs you pick however, aren't as important as how you use them.

First off, listen to whomever is drop calling, hit your map button, and start thinking like its a squad based tactical game.

Cuz it is.

The team that wins is almost always the team that engages fewer enemy mechs with more of thier own. Watch the above engagement, the enemy gets all strung out and gets defeated in detail. The first wave really does set the scene for the rest of the match, so most folk would like you to drop heavy, and drop well.

Good luck out there.

Good thing you like heavies, you can bring a dropdeck of 3 heavies and then one medium or light mech as a last resort.

Good IS heavies right now would be the Warhammer, Grasshopper, Black Knight, Marauder, Thunderbolt, Catapult, and Jagermech. You just need to have good builds on them.

Now, I'm one of those big mean scary clanners on Jade Falcon, so I'll tell you now not to run an XL engine on any of them, just don't pick one that requires an XL to be good. As a clanner I regularly get 2500 damage just dropping with randoms with enough kills to fill up 2 lances because I shoot the side torsos out of every enemy mech I see, and for whatever reason the IS is still running them.

I'd suggest Black Knights running standard engine builds, you can bring an STD330, 5 Medium pulse lasers in the torso, and 4 medium lasers split between the arms in one of the variants. Warhammer has some good STD builds too, and Marauder is known for almost always bringing standard engines only. Grasshopper and Thunderbolt can act like smaller Black Knights if they are the energy variants.

Catapult and Jagermech, while bringing high firepower and being nice in quickplay, almost always have XL engines for their builds, especially the Jagers. This high firepower also gets them focused quickly, a very deadly combination for a new player.

Also, the Jade Falcon borders are pretty quiet most of the time, no one wants to fight us. I can't blame them and would also suggest you go against easier targets such as Clan Wolf, they often have players online but no groups like those from JF. Smoke Jaguar is dead, and Ghost Bear usually only wakes up every once in awhile, but has some decent groups when they do actually do something.

IS vs IS battles are also possible, but being a Clanner, I'd have no information on them.

Lastly, joining a good unit will make your experience 100 times better. With just my 4 man team I usually only die once every other day I play, and that's actually when we've worn down to just a 2 man team.

EDIT:
Oh, and mediums, bring a standard engine one if possible if you want to live. Griffin 2N and the other 4 missile slot griffin are good, just pick between symetrical or asym. Crab is decent too, and the Hunchbacks are something to look at. The ones lighter than 50 tons often can't run a decent standard engine build except maybe the laser boating Black Jack.

Thanks for all the replies and advice guys, great community!

Also, the mechs I currently have skilled up don't look to be much use: Timberwolf (obviously, if I go IS), Atlas, Banshee, and Hunchie. Planning to pick up a Marauder pack today and get grinding.
