am i the only one out there that always pulls those two weapons off any mech i use that has them? in my opinion, unless it's a mech like the piranha, those two weapons are useless. they don't do enough damage and don't have enough range to really do any good. i usually add more armor or ammo in their place.

They're cheap weapons that don't take up much room. Plus low heat output for damage.

In MW 2 the all MG build was pretty deadly up close (might fool around with it on a future mech, assuming I can get 6 or more ballistic hardpoints).

I almost always drop those, too. I'll put higher range, higher damage weapons on there and balance those with more heat sinks and increased armor. Once in a while I'll keep the machine guns because they don't generate any heat, but that's rare.

You hit on something here. MW2 they were effective. MW4, not so much. We have no idea whatsoever how well they work on this game outside of beta or speculation on canon.

you can use them as crit seekers once you've done some damage and closed with your target.

I don't, but you could.

In all, the only small anything I'd keep would be four small pulse lasers for really up close. They have a low recycle time, and I mean -low-. Thats like a laser machine gun right there and that can be used to soften up armor so I cna launch my SRMs into it.

In close combat, those two weapons have better DPS for their weight and heat than anything else. Brawlers that fight up close and personal anyway and light mechs with the speed for quick strafing runs can use them very effectively. MWO's hardpoint system will prevent stacking too many of them, but that doesn't make them useless...

That's MWLL (where it's 1600m)...

I kinda like being able to keep up the fire on an enemy mech with a weapon that does not produce heat (MG) to avoid shutdowns and they sound pretty cool =)

not the kind that damage mechs.
Actually I don't think anything goes 1500m in this game.

In Mechwarrior 4 I always removed them but I loved using them in Mechwarrior 2 and 3.

M.Guns and S.Lasers provide a means of continuous fire at short range without your Mech overheating, or while you are circling and taking shots while your main weapons are reloading or while you are waiting to cool off. That might be the difference that allows you to take out that weakened limb of your opponent and give you the edge.

on some mechs, you need those weapons, because you dont have the heatsinks or tonnage to take other weapons, they are also great to keep the enemy busy, if you just spam someone with MG fire, he would try to run for cover. Most people dont like to stay under fire, even if its the most underrated, ineffective weapon ...

oh and some MG spam might be nice for "kill stealing"

Also good for single player trash in previous games that had them.

I was debating swapping out the 2 med lasers on my founders hunchback for 4 small. More damage and less heat for the same weight on a close range brawler. They may have a higher rate of fire, but I guess we don't know that yet.

I dont know, their was some devasting builds in MW4 using the machine guns.

In point based matches, using a light brimming with MGs was very effective.

I tried stuffing a daishi full of them. Problem was, they all hit different spots.

Yup, another instance of Battletech "getting it wrong" on the science. Imagine that ;)

I do the same - there were a few builds I had some luck with, in TT or in MW3/4, IIRC. But those were usually small mechs with jump jets and LOTS of MG's and/or flamers. Jump directly behind a heavy or assault and unload into their backsides B)

Medium Lasers are about the smallest weapon I will mount on most medium or larger mechs. Unless I actually expect to face LOTS of infantry - I mean, a Medium Laser will make infantry just as dead, but why waste heat?

NAs a scout, I'm tempted to grab a few of these and chew up the backs of mechs in close melee. Light enough damage they'll be tempted to ignore but still enough to weaken them.

Won't be my primary but it is tempting.
