Previous MW titles started with the PVE aspect and had PVP as a secondary afterthought. MWO could reverse the trend by integrating PVE campaigns which could act as both training grounds and a source for revenue/resources to fund PVP.
The big issue with something like that is whether it would cause too much damage to the player base. If too many people would rather play single player PVE campaigns then there might be player starvation in the PVP queues that would be bad for the game in the long run.
2) Decent long term play motivators. Factional warfare doesn't provide sufficient rewards to make it worthwhile but requires a larger time commitment to play. Factional warfare is essentially a limited respawn capture the flag game mode on a second set of maps. Design of the game elements to support answering the question "Why do I want to play factional warfare?" has been lackluster to say the least. Mech skill customization and choice is coming ... it will be interesting to see what gets implemented.
3) Competitive MWO will not support the game. It provides some publicity but 99% of the players will never compete at that level and most don't want to ... as a result, over-investing resources into making MWO an esport are going to backfire in terms of player retention and revenue unless resources are spent on aspects of the game relevant to the majority of the playerbase. (Consider the EVE Online annual tournaments ... can be fun to watch if you like the game but it is an add-on for the relatively small portion of the population that is interested ... game development is focused on features that attract and retain a much wider player base ... industry, pve, pvp options and balance ... true sandbox with longer lasting impact of player decisions and actions ... I don't know what, if anything, PGI could do to take MWO in such a direction .. or whether they should even consider it).
4) Some signs that the game will remain in active development. PGI is coming up on license renewal time and they do NOT appear to invest in development until securing the license for at least a few more years (FW wasn't even started into development until after they obtained the last license extension).

What this pool party needs is a serious dose of booze, inflatable toys and scantily clad people. What we keep getting is another bucket of water. And yet the organizers of this party keep wondering why people are grabbing their towels and fleeing like some one let a shark loose.
The first step to getting me back in the water is to put some fun back in the game then maybe I will start paying for admission.

PGI realized they were over their heads with those grandiose plans and bailed on the idea. Pretty much as they have done on this game entirely.
Wanna buy a mech pack?

Unlocking the frikking endo on Omnis. Tired of this massive disparity between the haves and have nots, the lack of diverse viable builds and Quirk Bandaids.

That's a fine idea. I wouldn't give them more money for it though. I want a more robust balance between clammer mechs as much as the next guy, but in the end thats not really content, or core mechanics of gameplay type fixes. Thats just more weapon/chassis balance, and Russ and crew have been using that as a diversion for years now instead of actual content. This community has been fine allowing spreadheet warriors to represent them for the most part for several years now, up to ohhh, I would say maybe the last 6 months. A big chunk of old timers leaving are just tired of hearing about spreadsheets.
Again, not to say I don't want that too or anything, would love me some better Summoner loadouts, but it's just not big enough for me anymore. This game needs a pretty big shake-up in core play or something BIG content wise(like PVE) for me to hand anymore cash to them.

I bought both their Mechs.
Yeah I am sad - but have plenty of cash

On a more serious note be cool if they somehow tied into the new Battletech computer game with maps, mechs and pilots to link in
