Master some mechs, play lots of games in quickplay, do some research on faction play as they will be changing it in two months time, I hope for the better but not holding my breath.

Their mechs are better, there are more of them and quite frankly....the Clans are 80% new players as it is. If you prefer winning, go Inner Sphere.

Understanding how the mechs work, that's the first part.
Understanding how the maps work, second part
And then moving with your team at all times.
You do that, you're doing better than over 50% of the PUGs that place Faction Play. Once players realise that they can't play like in QP (alone, doing your own thing etc etc), then you become a lot better in Faction Play. Lots of maps have chokes, you need to move with the team through them, share armour - or cost the game.
That said, go clan. There is a big imbalance right now for the average player and Faction Play, Clan mechs having the edge.

I'd suggest something different to the above comments though I somewhat agree with them. Find the public voice comms for a few factions and chat to them. Whoever is happy to have you along and friendly is the people I'd play with as most factions really need new players. Ultimately you just need four mechs weighing a max of 250 tons total which is easily doable. Theres a lot of good advice around on mechs prefered in FW but let the people you're dropping with advise on that as most units have particular rotations, mechs and playstyles they like to use. If they're worth dropping with they will help you.
As an aside I'd strongly suggest you read the articles linked on this page as they'll give you a good feel for FW.

They are slightly out of date unfortunately in terms of the mechs to use as they're pre the Kodiak but other than that I found it very helpful as a player new to FW.

Because many teams will flip-flop factions to take advantage of the rewards factions can grant them.
This is the case with mercenaries, and the MercStar Alliance.
We're a tough group with skilled leaders, well-refined mechs, and a wide array of international pilots. Come check us out sometime and we'll show you how to prepare for Faction Warfare!

It takes a LOT more skill to solo pug than it does to play with a group. The absolute WORST thing a new player can do, both for herself and other players, is to start off in faction play solo pugging with trial or unmastered mechs. Please don't do that.
In a unit that accepts newbies you'll do just fine in faction play, so that is the best thing to do. Find that unit and leave the faction choice to them.

And if you ever find yourself dropping with a unit, ask if they've room for the day, try and get multiple drops in with em an have em show ya the ropes. I'm not on too often, or I'd suggest taking a wolf contract right away. As it is, wolf, falcons, Steiner and FRR have been the most active I've noticed, of late. But that's on Late 'o clock North American time.

Yeah that's my thinking behind merc too. I tried a few of them to find which faction I liked and the merc side meant those I didn't I could simply abandon.
