But to really make use of this preparation time, we are missing a lot of information. For me the most important one is where my teammates are located on the current map. This way you can articulate a plan while you have time to do so which is especially useful for players not using voice-chat.
It should be quite easy to implement because we already have a minimap displayed in the preparation phase which just needs some mech or lance-icons added.
Another almost equally important information would be to know on which distance my team does best. For instance if i know that we have superior long-range firepower it could be a tactic to wait with pushing and prolong the long-range phase. And on the other hand knowing that we have many short-range brawlers we could push hard and try to not engage in long-range fighting at all.
To do so in a very compact and intuitive way you could simply put each weapon into a range-group determined by it's optimum range, e.g. "short", "mid" and "long" (and maybe even "LRM" because it's a bit special).
Then you multiply the firepower of each weapon in the same range-group to determine the mech's total firepower for each range-group.
With the resulting distribution you can then put the whole mech in a range-group and use icons to display each mech's range-group in all info-panels like the preparation-phase, the scoreboard or even the target overlay.
This way for example an assault pilot easily knows which mechs are brawlers waiting for a good push and which ones are better suited to support the push from the second row. Therefore they can make much more informed decisions and we probaly have less one-sided stomps because each team knows their weaknesses.
