How long do you think before a another developer could pick it up and start working on a new MW Sim title?

If you mean mainstream big budget company for a FPS Mech Warrior title never.
All the big ones just have to look at the poison spouted here to not go near a Mechwarrior title.
If you mean some cottage industry like MWLL that about 300 people will go near, probably the month after.

Maybe H.B.S will get the rest of the Art assets and continue to make turn based if we keep crowd funding them enough

Okay, do you genuinely have no clue what name recognition is? Or what determines the value of an IP period?

Ya the money it makes. Do you?

Money isn't everything, that's for sure, but you are asking about value.

I don't know why Star Trek is on the way out, maybe they milked the cow to much, I am not sure. I know STO wasn't what players wanted. This goes for The Old Republic as a matter of fact as well.

The STO movies will be lucky to break even.

Just looking at Star Trek: Beyond, they have an estimated $338,362,433 from ticket sales. That is JUST the movie. Compare that to anything Battletech related, and it's blown out of the water.

I don't think CBS will try to screw it up. You have to remember that the last ST based show was on a lesser network called UPN, that eventually merged with the WB, but inevitably got acquired by CBS... the other previous shows (before the original Star Trek series) were syndicated IIRC (they were not linked to any network). There's been time since the last ST show, so I think there's a chance of a decent revival given the right circumstances and content.

They already have screwed it up. It isn't that I think CBS will do a bad job it is how they are distributing it. They are going to air the first episode on normal broadcast television but all future episodes are only going to be on their paid streaming service. I and many others do not want or need yet another streaming service even if it has my Star Trek fix attached to it. I'm also not particularly enamored with the plot line for the new show, but I reserve judgement until I have seen it.

less than 5 years and I'd wager more in the 2-3 range.

Reasons

1) The 10 year gap was because at the time you needed a solid production company to fund the game. With the crowd funding options available today. that's not a huge impediment.

2) Some very talented people with a passion created MW:LL. Yes, it was a mod but was a mod solely because they could not afford to do it another way since it was free. With Crowd funding, that may not be the case the next go round.

So, If a talented group of game programmers gets together and does a demo and puts it up on kickstarter, I'd see it being funded in short order. It would then be up to them to do what PGI has failed to do on so many fronts.... deliver.

they tried to do that with descent. they got a c+d. crowdfunded game development only seems to work when someone has an original franchise. mwll was done under the radar and got away with it only because they weren't in competition with anyone, and the rights holders simply did not care. when they did start to care, they got shut down pretty quick.

I'd rather not wait a decade... I'd be okay with PGI selling the rights but even if this game has flaws I'd rather it live for now.

While not a mechwarrior game, I think it is likely that HBS will do a couple of expansions for their BT game... and a clan one is pretty obvious. They have previously done kickstarters to fund their shawdow run expansions so after the BT release I expect one of those to pop up to fund the expansions not long after BT releases.

Yah. They're trying to use Star Trek to sell their streaming service, and it will likely kill both. The only hope is that it survives it's first season, they give up, and put it on TV.

I'll agree with you there, but just remember this...

Access to all the other Star Trek related shows requires "paid access", so it's kind of their incentive to do this. I don't approve of it, but I understand this.

What SHOULD be done IMO is to provide a whole years worth of the new show over the air for free first... if the content is worth watching, then having future seasons being exclusively streamed can work (there are shows on other steaming sites that intentionally "pick up" these formerly network-based shows to increase their own userbase). The problem is the proof of concept of the show itself may be its own problem. It remains to be seen.

CBS is trying to capitalize on the nostalgia of the base show itself, but the show itself has to remind us how good it is in the first place. That is the actual challenge.

It won't happen... because usually failing the first season is an instantly pulled plug more often than not.

Why don't you find something Battletech is doing (not MWO, but something else) that is doing that is GREATER than any of the lowest valued "recent" (within the last 5 years) Star Trek movies?

You will have trouble finding this.

How long's it been since MechWarrior 4?

Nobody's going to give the ultra-purists what they want - except Harebrained Schemes, which is working on as close to a direct tabletop translation as you're going to get.

Stop asking Piranha to kill your game. Any property whose playerbase chokes its own supplier to death is a property no other developer is ever going to touch for the rest of ever.

This reminds me of other arguments like if the Unseen mechs would even make it into the game. I guess time will tell and you guys can gloat about being right or apologize to me about being so wrong. :) Please no pm's, apologize in general chat. :)

MWLL done it because WSS had license agreement with M$ to produce a non profit MW game on CE2. I know because I worked on it and I had to sign a contract.

Yes, but those other paid access streaming services that I can watch previous Star Trek series on have a much more diverse catalog of content than CBS all access is going to have. CBS is trying to sell me on a streaming service that is $5.99 with commercials or $9.99 without commercials to watch a new Star Trek series and 400 variations of NCIS. It just isn't going to happen. Even if there is a bunch of people willing to do that how many are even aware it is happening? I foresee a lot of people watching the first episode and thinking it is a pilot for a potential new series that never materializes and six months later think to themselves whatever happened to that new series?

That would certainly be more workable, but I still find it unlikely to work if they insist on their own streaming service given their less than diverse catalog.

I loved MWO but I had to give it up and put my money into World Of Warcraft Legion it makes me feel like the money I pay into the game is worth it.

Now if Blizzard bought out MWO and made a World Of Mechs game set in 3050 and made expansions for it PVE and PVP Planetary raids and stuff I would play and pay a monthly for it.

didnt know that. i only caught the tail end of the MWLL fervor and grudgingly switched over to mwo when servers became scarce.
